The Population Council is seeking applications from pharmaceutical development scientists from Africa with experience working in one or more of the Council’s current research areas of interest noted below. The Jeiven/CBR fellowship provides an opportunity for established scientists to work alongside leading scientists in the field for 4 months. CBR is a nonprofit pharmaceutical product development center located on the campus of Rockefeller University in New York City.

Our mission it to improve choice and access to products that promote sexual and reproductive health and address unmet global public health priorities. We partner with pharmaceutical companies to manufacture and market our products. Our facilities include six well equipped state of the art laboratories, with access to animal facilities, conducting basic research, preclinical R&D, and formulation and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing.

For more than 60 years, research conducted at CBR laboratories has addressed critical questions in reproductive health and supported the development of innovative products that help protect the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide, including seven US Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive and reproductive health products. It is estimated that 170 million women are currently using a Council-developed contraceptive product.

Current research areas of interest for this opportunity focus on basic, preclinical and early formulation research to investigate and explore new drug delivery systems, including:

1.      Discovery and development of non-hormonal female and male contraceptive agents

2.      Discovery and development of novel anti-HIV/anti-sexually transmitted infection (STI) agents

3.      Development of novel HIV/STI cure strategies

4.      Discovery and development of novel drug delivery systems

5.      GMP manufacturing of anti-HIV/anti-STI proteins such as griffithsin

6.      Phase 1 clinical trials of Council microbicides
