Description

We are seeking an engaging and motivating state certified teacher, with strong classroom management skills to instruct the English Language Arts component of our four-week Summer Academy program. This course provides instruction in reading, writing and communication skills through weekly discussions, research and debates focused on high-interest current events and sports related topics. The ideal candidate will have experience with inquiry-based learning techniques and supporting students in small-group work. This part-time position (18 hours per week, plus pre-program prep) reports to the Summer Academy Director.


Summer Academy English Language Arts Instructor Responsibilities:

 Engage in the development and implementation of the New Heights Summer Academy curriculum, with sports and high-interest current events serving as a running theme.

 Serve as the lead instructor of two classes daily of either 5th & 6th graders or 7th & 8th graders.

 Supervise and engage a classroom assistant teacher and Summer Academy team leaders (camp counselors) in support of student-athletes’ educational experience in the classroom.

 Provide assessment, differentiated instruction and academic support as needed to ensure students’ educational growth over the four-week program.

 Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to students as assigned by Summer Academy Director.

 Actively participate in SA 2018 staff training and planning (July 3rd, 5th & 6th).

 Be responsible for the safety and well-being of all student-athletes enrolled in Summer Academy.

 Be a positive role model and example for all campers and junior staff.

 Promote and model New Heights’ T.R.E.E. values throughout the summer.

 Bachelor's Degree required; preference given to candidates with Master's Degree or higher
