Organization Description


A Way Home Washington (AWHWA), a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE MissionWorks, is mission-driven to prevent and end youth and young adult homelessness across Washington state. AWHWA partners with the state Office of Homeless Youth, philanthropic foundations, advocates, and service providers who support over 13,000 unaccompanied young people experiencing homelessness in Washington. AWHWA leads and coordinates these stakeholders as we work collectively to build a statewide system so that local communities can respond to youth and young adult homelessness in their areas.


Position Summary


The Communications Manager is responsible for ensuring that AWHWA produces consistent, creative, high-quality products and helps to build and maintain the organization’s brand and reputation with all audiences. This role will lead strategic planning and developing content for all of AWHWA’s external and internal communications, including media outreach and management, as well as storytelling across various platforms and projects. This includes supporting our Anchor Communities Initiative and working with stakeholders to develop and implement local communications strategies. In addition, this position includes project tracking and task management. The role engages with a diverse group of important external partners, as well as the entire internal AWHWA team.


Essential Job Functions


Media Strategy & Management

  • Develop thoughtful, creative outreach strategies to promote AWHWA’s work;
  • Develop AWHWA media list and cultivate relationships with members of the press;
  • Manage and vet media requests;
  • Position AWHWA as the “go-to” source for youth and young adult homelessness issues in Washington state;
  • Pitch stories and provide resources to reporters;
  • Write press releases and coordinate press conferences for major announcements and launches;
  • Monitor local, state, and national news related to AWHWA and issues related to youth and young adult homelessness.


Content Development & Outreach

  • Develop and implement annual communications plan that supports AWHWA’s strategic goals;
  • Work with AWHWA staff to generate regular content and lead writing, editing, production, and execution of blog posts, newsletters, videos, articles, and messaging that reflects and elevates our efforts;
  • Lead and manage all social media content for AWHWA;
  • Draft op-eds and other communication on behalf of the Executive Director, other principals, and the organization;
  • Develop and refine content for public speaking engagements;
  • Collaborate with members of AWHWA stakeholder groups to develop and deliver personal narratives about their experiences of homelessness in youth and young adulthood to external audiences;
  • Lead and support the AWHWA communications workgroup, comprised of communications staff from partner organizations;
  • Develop and regularly update AWHWA branding and style guide, including supporting consistent staff use of all logos, letterhead, and related materials;
  • Edit written content according to AWHWA style standards, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations;
  • Create and maintain library of AWHWA assets and content;
  • Act as key point of content for AWHWA website maintenance, lead regular website content management, and provide active leadership through website re-design projects;
  • Identify key audience targets and growth opportunities among key stakeholders, political actors, and the general public;
  • Lead and guide relationship with communications consultants to enhance AWHWA products.


Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills, including strong copyediting experience;
  • Proven record of developing media strategy, pitching stories, and managing media relationships;
  • Organized, efficient, and self-motivated;
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, efficient work habits, and project management skills;
  • Creative problem solver and critical thinker;
  • Highly proficient experience with social media platforms and personal interest in learning new tools;
  • Able to distill and translate complex concepts, including policy issues, to lay audiences;
  • Expert use of Microsoft Office software, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel;
  • Enjoys working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment as a part of a growing, high-performing team;
  • Demonstrates professionalism, good humor, patience, and the ability to handle stress;
  • Experienced with graphic design software;
  • Highly experienced leading coalitions and workgroups, as well as overseeing communications consultants;
  • Demonstrates commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion, both internally and across our efforts to serve all youth and young adults experiencing homelessness in Washington state.


Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in communications, marketing, media relations, or related field;
  • Professional experience in a nonprofit environment, familiarity with youth and young adult homelessness a plus.


Physical Requirements


Little or no exertion, may require extended periods at a computer. May occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.


Hours and Travel


This is a full-time, exempt position. Regular office hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST, may include occasional evening or weekend hours for special events, as well as occasional overnight travel.
