Executive Coordinator

Two schools at the City University of New York (CUNY) – the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at City College of New York and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies – are establishing a national center to recruit, develop and connect diverse leaders for social change who can imagine and implement visionary solutions for the enormous challenges we face in the 21st century. The new Leadership Center for Democracy and Social Justice sees a compelling opportunity in the abundant talent of an emerging generation of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders and will meet a vital need for a scaled initiative that prepares leaders early in their careers in social justice traditions, ideology, literature and history in order to achieve power in all sectors.

The flagship programs of the Leadership Center will be intensive cohort programs for early and mid-career participants that will provide a broad, ecumenical curriculum to give leaders a grounding in the history and theory of social change, in addition to real-world practice and experience. Leaders in the cohorts will participate in paid internships, fellowships, and sabbaticals; have options to connect to degree-granting academic programs; and have access to robust wrap-around services including mentorship, career services, and community building.

As one of its first positions in this pilot start-up year, the Leadership Center is hiring an Executive Coordinator to provide scheduling and right-hand administrative support to two Co-Chairs and the Launch Executive Director, then transitioning to the permanent Executive Director in early 2022. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the launch team for this new initiative and be part of a dynamic, responsive learning culture that seeks to meet the needs of social justice organizations and emerging leaders of color. This position reports to the Launch Executive Director and will be one of a team of approximately eight staff and over two dozen prominent movement leaders serving on the Advisory Board.

Core responsibilities:

  • Provide right-hand administrative support to three principals of the Center: two Co-Chairs, who are leading on the fundraising and overall establishment of the Center,  and the Launch Executive Director, who is managing operations and the Center’s staff and consultants during this pilot phase. Once the permanent Executive Director is hired in early 2022, this position will transition to providing most of the support to the ED, with some remaining responsibilities to the Co-Chairs but at fewer hours.
  • Manage scheduling, ensuring meetings are scheduled in a timely manner and that priorities are reflected on the schedule
  • Provide support to principals in organizing events, roundtables, op-eds, panels, and other engagement activities
  • Taking meeting notes and/or creating summaries of conversations
  • Sending out meeting requests, notes, and other correspondence on behalf of principals
  • Organizing files and document management
  • Tracking tasks and follow-ups from meetings
  • Managing tech and logistical needs, e.g. Zoom, Google, Slack, etc.
  • Other right-hand administrative support as needed

Qualifications:

  • At least 1-3 years of experience of administrative work, preferably in supporting those in principal positions
  • Utmost professionalism, discretion, and tact - able to hold confidential information and demonstrate good judgment
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and to racial equity; experience in a social justice or mission-driven organization is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with higher education settings is a plus
  • Strong self-starter and self-organizer
  • Strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Strong writing skills
  • Works well under uncertainty and seeks opportunities to try and learn; constantly seeks feedback and uses feedback to improve;
  • Flexible, positive attitude and someone who brings joy to their work.

The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000 annually. This position will be expected to work in-person in New York City, dependent on public health guidelines. This position will be an employee of the CUNY Research Foundation, which provides a comprehensive benefits package.
