The NYC Homeless Healthcare Fellowship offers a one-year fellowship curriculum that will support up to three licensed, board-eligible primary care physicians who join select New York City homeless health organizations as fellows. The program aims to enhance the knowledge and skills related to homeless healthcare for early-career physicians interested in providing care for this marginalized population in New York City.  

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting October 1, 2020 and application deadline is December 1, 2020.

What Is The Structure Of The NYC Homeless Healthcare Fellowship?

Clinical Work - During the fellowship year, the fellow will spend clinical time working alongside experienced homeless healthcare providers delivering shelter-based care, mobile health, and/or street medicine at one of three homeless healthcare organizations (Care for the Homeless, Project Renewal, or Janian Medical Care). 

Mentorship & Clinical Supervision - The fellow will be matched with an experienced homeless healthcare provider for weekly Clinical Supervision sessions during which the fellow will be reviewing complex cases, alternative management strategies, and health system/social service navigation.

Scholarly Work - The fellow will work on a scholarly activity which will result in a final presentation as well as a final product, such as a white paper, original article, provider toolkit, and/or abstract for submission to a professional meeting.

Education - The fellow will participate in lectures, seminars, & workshops each week, with educational content focused in three domains: Medical Care, Health Systems & Social Services, & Physician Resiliency. The core subjects covered within each domain include the following:

Medical Care:

  • Conditions/Disease Management and Preventive Health
  • Challenges of Migration
  • Virology (HIV/Hep C)
  • Sexual & Gender-Affirming Health
  • Addiction Medicine & Drug-User Health
  • Mental Health
  • Trauma-Informed Care

Health Systems & Social Services:

  • Public Health
  • Advocacy

Physician Resiliency:

  • Vicarious Trauma/Burnout
  • Mindfulness

Experiential Learning – Each week, the fellow will participate in experiential learning opportunities related to high-yield areas including psychiatry, addiction & drug-user health, and virology. Additionally, the fellow will rotate at the Department of Homeless Services Office of the Medical Director for one day a week for three months. 

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to licensed family-medicine or internal medicine physicians. Physicians must be board-eligible or board-certified.

  • One-page detailed statement of interest in the fellowship. Please include any relevant experience, how this position will prepare you for a future career in homeless healthcare, and what you hope to gain from the fellowship
  • Three letters of reference, including one from the director of your most recent training program or recent employer (such as residency program director)
  • Any materials illustrating your interest in homeless healthcare (e.g., white papers, research reports, policy briefs, presentations, abstracts)

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Each fellow will earn an annual salary negotiated with the host homeless healthcare organization, ranging from $100k -115k
  • Each fellow is eligible for all full-time benefits, including health insurance, disability insurance, and annual & sick leave.
  • Additional benefits include funding for approved conferences & a stipend.
