Power California harnesses the energy of young voters of color and their families to create a state that is equitable, inclusive and just for everyone who calls California home. We are a growing, statewide, multiracial civic engagement organization dedicated to building the power of young people at the ballot box so that we can reshape California, our democracy, and the systems and policies that harm our communities. Power California is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a sibling 501(c)(4) organization, PowerCA Action, and locations in Oakland, Merced, Fresno, and Los Angeles.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Digital Campaign Strategist develops and coordinates strategies and campaigns to engage young voters through email, text, digital advertisements, and other digital communication channels to increase visibility, contacts, and engagement for both Power California and its sibling 501(c)(4) entity, PowerCA Action, as well as the 501(c)(4)‘s political action committee (PAC). Reporting to the Communications & Narrative Director, this position executes digital campaigns to engage online supporters and bring them into action and membership. The Digital Campaign Strategist must demonstrate dexterity with computer technology, digital platforms, and digital analytics. The Digital Campaign Strategist works closely with their supervisor and the two other members of the narrative and influence department, the Senior Narrative Strategist and the Social Media Coordinator.

This person in this role must understand the difference between organizing and mobilization, and that the job is to help people step into leadership and drive change in the issues that affect their lives. This person must believe in the leadership of young people of color and see how they are leading and creating change in our communities and throughout the nation. The individual in this position must be an avid consumer of politics, news, pop culture, and digital media trends and sees how they intersect. A sharp thinker and project manager who can easily develop mass and targeted digital campaigns to shift the conversation on an issue, this person must be able to translate bigger narratives into digestible content, including written, video and graphic content. To be successful in this role, this individual must possess strong writing, analytical and evaluation skills. The Digital Campaign Strategist must also be someone committed to movement organizing to demand justice and able to implement strategic communications plans that are deeply aligned with our two entities' political campaigns to drive large-scale change across California.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Digital Campaign Strategy

  • Plans and implements integrated digital strategies and campaigns to support fundraising, membership, legislative, initiative, policy, and candidate work for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities and the PAC
  • Works closely with the Social Media Coordinator, Senior Narrative Strategist, and supervisor to develop a digital content strategy that translates complex narratives into digestible, accurate, and engaging pieces of content with mass appeal; ensures content is pushed out through the appropriate digital channels (mass texts, mass emails, advertisements, petitions, etc.)
  • Ensures integration and automation across mass emails, websites, digital action tool, and digital asset management solution
  • Develops 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4), and PAC digital contact and supporter growth strategies and tracks progress toward goals
  • Manages digital advertising (usually via Facebook Ads Manager, Google Ads Manager, and/or YouTube); works closely with Social Media Coordinator to plan and produce graphics and videos; works with appropriate teams to determine target audiences, timeline, and budget; and develops evaluation reports with final tallies and takeaways
  • Supports media handling, media requests, and media tracking
  • Manages other digital projects as assigned, collaborating with necessary stakeholders and executing steps on a timeline
  • Supports supervisor and others with drafting and copyediting materials and written content, as assigned

Digital Management, Analytics, and Evaluation

  • Ensures both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) websites are kept up to date, including, but not limited to, posting blogs and media hits, and creating landing pages for key campaigns and projects 
  • Uploads new contacts into our email database on an ongoing basis, creates and updates segmented lists, schedules mass email sends, handles any related troubleshooting, and manages rentals and purchases of mailing lists between our two entities
  • Manages an integrated community engagement platform for hosting digital actions (online petitions, call scripts, mass texts), and sets clear goals for reaching targets and implementing tactics to amplify digital actions through timely emails, blogs, graphics, video, and digital toolkits
  • Creates digital growth metrics and regularly evaluates digital campaign effectiveness, including monthly reports for website, email analytics, A/B testing, and social media engagement metrics, making recommendations to adjust communications strategies as necessary
  • Develops and maintains data tracking systems for digital platforms, including, but not limited to, the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) websites, digital asset management solution, and digital action tool

Communications Strategy and Movement Building

  • Stays on top of digital trends, practices, and applications and identifies opportunities to improve our digital reach and engagement
  • Engages Power California Alliance partner organizations on digital campaigns and provides support and training to partner organizations to strengthen their digital efforts
  • Produces compelling digital content for both entities and the PAC, including, but not limited to, graphics, memes, and digital ads, as well as videos for other departments’ use, including Development, as needed
  • Collaborates closely with Senior Narrative Strategist to develop communications strategy plans for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities’ electoral and policy campaigns
  • Supports development of framing, writing, and messaging strategy for electoral policy campaigns and issues, in collaboration with field and policy departments
  • Supports messaging development and spokespeople trainings for partner organizations and other allies
  • Supports additional communications work, including story collection, training and capacity building of partners, and earned media and other communications efforts, as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Digital Media and Communications Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years or 2 election cycles of experience managing digital campaigns
  • Strong knowledge of backend management of digital platforms (EveryAction, Canto, Mailchimp, or similar tools)
  • Able to utilize and interpret digital analytics and various metrics (impressions, reach, click-rate, A/B testing and others) to drive greater effectiveness
  • Proficiency with digital advertising platforms, such as Facebook Ads Manager, Google Ads Manager, and YouTube
  • Skilled at translating complex concepts into digestible digital content with mass appeal
  • Ability to develop strategy and create concrete plans to execute strategies, including developing goals, plans, benchmarks and timelines
  • Strong web content management skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with ability to write for different audiences and mediums
  • Good eye for visual design; strong understanding of content with broad appeal for young people
  • Ability to quickly create videos and graphics preferred
  • Deep experience in how digital strategy can help advance off-line grassroots organizing, advocacy, and electoral engagement work

Additional Qualifications

  • Passion for and experience in working with young people of color, low-income immigrants, and refugees, especially from an intersectional perspective, including LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Familiarity with 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC structures a plus
  • Ability to be strategic, understand organizational goals, be aware of opportunities and challenges, and take initiative to achieve goals; works well independently
  • Strong time management, organizational, and work planning skills; ability to adjust work activity as needed and manage multiple projects according to timelines
  • Must be highly computer-literate, with skills in word processing; spreadsheets; web/email applications; and, in particular, design programs such as Canva and Affinity/Adobe Suite; Macintosh knowledge preferred
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent cross-cultural skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds, including, but not limited to, high school students, young adults, and community and elected leaders
  • Strong verbal communication skills, presentation, and facilitation skills
  • Flexible, team-oriented approach to problem-solving
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment; independent, proactive and able to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and changing priorities; comfortable with on-the-ground learning
  • Commitment to embodying the change we seek; able to act with integrity, compassion, and openness to feedback
  • Bilingual or multilingual language skills a plus
  • Occasional nights and weekends required; during campaign season, it’s frequent
  • Must have a working cell phone with a data plan and a working home Internet connection with adequate speed
  • Ability to travel frequently, within California, and occasionally nationally, for periods of 1 to 4 days at a time, up to 6 times per year
  • Must have unlimited access to a reliable automobile and have the ability to drive; valid California driver’s license and, if driving own car, proof of adequate insurance coverage required
  • Based in or near Los Angeles, California strongly preferred (within 25 miles); open to the possibility of Oakland or Fresno; some telework privileges may be granted

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range of $63,000–$70,000
