Workshop Center Chef

 

The Highlander Mission

 

Highlander serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. We work with people fighting for justice, equality and sustainability, supporting their efforts to take collective action to shape their own destiny. Through popular education, participatory research, and cultural work, we help create spaces -- at our center and in local communities -- where people gain knowledge, hope and courage, expanding their ideas of what is possible. We develop leadership and help create and support strong, democratic organizations that work for justice, equality and sustainability in their own communities and that join with others to build broad movements for social, economic and restorative environmental change.

 

The Workshop Center hosts thousands of guests every year. It provides a welcoming and safe space where people and groups from across identities, geography and perspective come to learn from each other to build a collective analysis and strategy for movement building.    

 

Overview of position:

Plan and implement all food related activities of the Workshop Center to include work with local organic growers, Highlander’s garden and integrate with Educational programming. Aid in the planning and execution of special events, camps and special projects, as needed. Exercise of discretion and independent judgment. The Workshop Center Chef is a part of the Workshop Center Team.

 

Work Relationship/Accountability/Authority

This position is coordinated by the Workshop Center Coordinator. This position acts, in conjunction with the Workshop Center Housekeeping Manager, as a team leader for all Workshop Center Staff.

 

 

General Duties and Organizational Values:

  • Act and speak organizationally

o  Represent the mission, strategic plan, and work plan of Highlander in meetings, fieldwork and events where appropriate

o  Share Highlander’s history and educational process with others

o  Share in hosting visitors and groups

o  Participate in strategic and annual organizational planning and evaluation

o  Maintain a high standard of political and ethical behavior

o  Actively participate as a member of a democratically managed center

o  Attend Staff and Board meetings, Staff retreats, and other meetings as deemed necessary

  • Keep constituents at the center of the work; maintain respectful interactions that support the development of individuals and groups
  • Support the work of the staff as a whole

o  Work collaboratively

o  Serve on staff committees

o  Accept organizational tasks as assigned

o  Clean up after oneself and help keep up office common areas

o  Share responsibility for opening/closing Highlander’s buildings as first in or last out

·        Time management

o  Do careful planning, documentation, and evaluation of team and individual activities including monthly work plan and report

o  Schedule staff

o  Turn expenditure requests and receipts in on time

o  Attend staff and board meetings, staff retreats and other meetings as deemed necessary; be on time for meetings and events

 

Time Commitment

This position is none exempt and is entitled to overtime. The Workshop Center Chef position is a part-time permanent position working an average of 32 hours per week. It is understood that additional hours may be required from week to week or month to month and flexibility in arrival and departure time is a must.

Responsibilities/Duties

Planning and Evaluation

·        Share in the planning and evaluation of the workshop center

·        Participate in strategic and annual organizational planning;

·        Strategize, develop and implement, in conjunction with Director, Workshop Center Coordinator and Staff, policies, procedures and guidelines for workshop center use.

 

Workshop Center Chef

·        Schedule kitchen staff to accommodate meal request and delegate task accordingly with adequate supervision

·        Share in the cooking and cleaning work to provide safe, efficient and welcoming functions of the Workshop Center for meals, lodging and meetings spaces.

·        Plan seasonal menus serving a wide variety of healthful menus utilizing a maximum of in season fresh produce and a minimum of processed food to be agreed upon with workshop center staff and coordinator.

·        Work with kitchen staff and Buildings and Grounds team to plan and use produce from on-site organic garden and orchard.

·        Develop and maintain relationships with local organic suppliers in order to increase the use of fresh food. 

·        Build and maintain schedule for staff with daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly duties while exercising great motivational skills.

·        Inform Workshop Center Coordinator or Buildings & Grounds Manager of needed structural repairs.

·        Ensure workshop center compliance with state and federal health codes.

·        Ensure workshop center compliance with the American with Disabilities Act, as fiscally feasible at this stage in the workshop centers development.

·        Share in the planning, purchase and delivery of capital equipment.

·        Track orders and turn in receipts in a timely manner.

·        Aid in the training of Workshop Center Staff in order to comply with any state and federal requirements for such certification.

·        Aid in the planning of events such as Homecoming, Children’s Camp and other special events.

·        Maintain central files (file all paperwork, keep files current and organized, assist other personnel with finding files).

·        Plan and train staff with the goal of embracing and serving a wide variety of healthful menus utilizing a maximum of fresh produce and a minimum of processed food.

·        Welcome and engage Workshop Center participants and orient them where they need to be.

·        General sense of Highlander History

·        Other duties as assigned and agreed upon as a team
