Outreach Coordinator in Underserved Communities

Position Summary: The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for creating, managing and leading an outreach plan to promote and expand NAMI Miami-Dade free mental health programs in historically marginalized underserved communities in Miami Dade-County. The position is exempt full time 40 hours/week; Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·        In collaboration with the entire NAMI staff:

o  Create, manage and lead an outreach plan for NAMI Miami-Dade programs for underserved communities which may include but not limited to: Miami Gardens, Opa-locka, Little Haiti, Florida City.

o  Coordinate, promote and help expand NAMI Miami-Dade Programs

o  Initiate additional NAMI National programs; facilitate and create presentations that include but are not limited to Sharing Hope: Mental Wellness in the Black Community, Faithnet: Reaching Out to Religious Leaders, and Family and Friends

o  Collaborate with NAMI Miami-Dade Community Partners; build new partnerships in these underserved communities and the faith communities

o  Ensure that grant deliverables are met by collecting and inputting data, tracking progress, and contributing to reports

o  Develop and implement strategies to create and strengthen relationships with volunteers, peers, families, donors, funders, and community partners

o  Following the NAMI train-the-trainer model, build sustainable peer and family member facilitator capacity in these communities

o  Provide community presentations and attend community meetings to promote programs

o  Serve as a representative and hosts outreach tables at community events, health fairs, faith events, and other events as needed

o  Participate in and facilitate NAMI Miami-Dade programs, including support groups when appropriate

o  Recruit, interview, and mentor outreach and program volunteers as needed


·        In collaboration with the Board of Directors: assist in creating a NAMI Miami-Dade Black Affairs Advisory Board; assist in providing strategic direction and create policies for program planning in the underserved communities; assist in creating a marketing plan for cultural competency; assist in creating surveys and assist in holding focus groups

·        In conjunction with entire NAMI staff: answer Helpline calls; assist with the annual MDC Walk for Mental Health Awareness, the annual Mental Health Film Festival (postponed due to Covid19), and other events

·        Other duties as assigned

Travel: Frequent local travel to make presentations and meet with community organizations – must have reliable transportation; once/twice per year travel with the staff team to the NAMI Florida and NAMI National conference(s); all travel expenses (mileage/per diems) and conference costs are paid by NAMI Miami-Dade. 

Preferred Qualifications:

·        Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

·        Individual living successfully with a mental health condition and/or friend or family member of an individual with a mental health condition

·        Understanding of and sensitivity to the issues faced by individuals and families impacted by mental health conditions

·        Experience working in historically marginalized underserved communities and organizations

·        Experience working in nonprofits, mental health, community outreach, or other applicable experience

·        Experience in developing successful partnerships with community organizations

·        Willingness to occasionally work evenings and weekends

·        Comfortable and familiar with public speaking

·        Excellent written and oral communication skills; confident on the phone serving as a supportive and empathetic point of contact for program participants and callers

·        Capable of quickly and independently learning online software and data management and communication tools, such as but not limited to Microsoft Office 365; CRM (Salsa training available)

·        Excellent organizational and time management skills

·        Ability to adapt to changing situations and manage multiple priorities

·        Ability to interact effectively and positively with diverse populations

·        Demonstrate a positive attitude and a sense of humor; commitment to teamwork and support of colleagues

·        Must have reliable transportation

Preferences but NOT Requirements:

·        Familiarity with NAMI programs and/or participation in one or more NAMI education programs or support groups

·        Data collection and evaluation experience

·        Bilingual: fluent in English, Creole, or Spanish (NOTa requirement)

·        Success in working with volunteers


Physical Demands:

·        While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, communicate, and use repetitive motions.

·        While performing the duties of this position, the employee may frequently lift and or move 40 pounds of materials and set up an outreach table.

·        The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from multiple people and interact with the public and other staff.

Location: in-person located at our office at 299 Alhambra Circle, Coral Gables, FL 33134

Background Check & Drug Screening: All staff are required to pass a background check and may be asked to pass a drug screening test 

Job Type: exempt, Full-time 40 hours; position is in office/in-person with frequent travel within Miami-Dade

Salary: $37,000 - $45,000

·        All 4 current staff have been fully vaccinated for Covid-19.

·        We are growing. We are in the process of hiring 5 additional staff.

·        All non-vaccinated staff and volunteers are required to wear a mask and abide by social distancing guidelines. 

·        All staff and volunteers are required to answer a daily wellness questionnaire.

·        All guests are required to wear a mask, abide by social distancing guidelines and take a daily wellness questionnaire. 

·        Face masks are provided
