The Potter’s House is a café, bookstore, and event space -- but as a nonprofit social enterprise, we’re also much more than that. The Potter’s House is a deeply rooted space where we build relationships across our differences, envision just alternatives, and grow the movements that will make them possible. Since 1960, we have been a steady, welcoming presence in Adams Morgan, offering “radical hospitality” to all who walk through our doors, and serving thousands of free meals each year to neighbors who might otherwise go hungry through our “Pay It Forward” program.

The Program & Outreach Manager advances the public-facing and mission-related work of The Potter’s House -- building relationships and collaborations with the public, our guests, and a wide range of external partners, all with the goal of increasing our positive impact on our community. This is a salaried, full-time position with some weekend hours.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Support the design, planning, and execution of The Potter’s House’s mission-related programming, including strategy, systems, success measures, and program implementation.
  • Assist with program reporting, budget management, and donor management.
  • Represent The Potter’s House in external partnerships and other settings.
  • Support Executive Director with special projects.

Case Management

  • Using a harm reduction, strengths-based approach, build relationships with Pay It Forward guests to mutually identify needs and help them navigate available resources.
  • Connect guests to necessary services and supports for which they are eligible, and facilitate smooth transitions across agencies.
  • Maintain robust current knowledge of and relationships within the metro-area social services landscape.
  • Work in partnership with front-of-house staff to manage and smooth daily operations and interactions with guests.

Outreach and Communications

  • Coordinate The Potter’s House’s online presence, including social media, periodic website updates, and email newsletter
  • Develop and grow mutually beneficial external partnerships that raise The Potter’s House’s profile and improve our offerings.

Operations

  • Support cafe/bookstore staff with managerial oversight and assistance on the floor as needed.
  • Monitor and manage public-facing email accounts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

You’ll be a great candidate for this job if you…

  • Have a heart for service and a demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice
  • Bring at least 1-2 years of experience -- ideally, informed by some formal training -- in providing case management/advocacy to individuals experiencing substantial challenges
  • Enjoy both big-picture visioning and day-to-day operations
  • Love managing lots of details and creating systems to help you keep it all organized
  • Are energized by and comfortable with working with a wide range of stakeholders and the public, including a diverse array of our community members
  • Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal and de-escalation skills
  • Know your way around social media and can produce strong visual and written content
  • Enjoy solving problems creatively, especially on the fly
  • Have flexibility in your schedule to accommodate weekend and/or evening coverage
  • Are able to be productive and get work done in a coffee-shop environment with lots of activity

Bonus points for:

  • Credentials in social work and/or mental health
  • Spanish-language ability
  • Experience working with tools such as Canva, SquareSpace, or MailChimp
  • Experience in a public-facing or customer-service setting
