The Ackerman Institute seeks an innovative and experienced administrator, teacher, trainer, and clinician to provide leadership to the post-graduate training program. We are looking for an individual who is committed to creating a collaborative learning environment for our trainees, our faculty (teachers and supervisors), and to providing the highest quality of family therapy to the families we serve.

This is a key leadership position within the Institute that reports directly to the President, provides intellectual leadership, and administrative coordination of all aspects of the training program. Our OMH clinic provides couple and family therapy for families of diverse populations in New York City and is staffed by the trainees in our family therapy program.

We are looking for a Director of Training committed to the examination of the influence of experiences of marginalization in all forms and the clinical implications. The Ackerman Relational Approach will continue to be used to organize the principles of practice across all levels of the training program. This Director of Training position will have opportunities to expand our current offerings in training and work closely with the Director of Clinical Services.


Essential Job Functions:

Work with the President and the Leadership Team to provide a vision for the Institute. Work with the President, Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Chief Medical Officer, Clinical Operation Officers, Faculty, Trainees, and Staff to provide premier training in family therapy and create and maintain a culture that fully embraces values of inclusion and collaboration.

Oversee the training program, which includes:

  • Provide mentoring and supervision to faculty.
  • Plan and facilitate faculty meetings with attention to the professional development of faculty.
  • Coordinate online trainings to develop remote learning.
  • Provide for additional skills training for faculty in developing inclusive, socially just, and critically conscious perspectives.
  • Work with the Dean of Admissions to recruit students for Foundations, Live Clinical, and Externship
  • program:
  • Coordinate efforts with the Dean of Admissions to create and sustain a welcoming environment for incoming and current trainees.
  • Work with Dean of Admissions to establish a feedback mechanism between interviews of dual students and assigned faculty.
  • Build connections between current and previous faculty to obtain a full narrative regarding a student’s journey in the training program.
  • Coordinate efforts (e.g. establish a task force) to prepare, evaluate, develop, and integrate the training curriculum:
  • Prepare, review and approve core curriculum syllabi.
  • Facilitate and work with project directors to bring in new training materials from projects so they are integrated into the training program.
  • Develop and utilize critically conscious faculty assignment process.
  • Work in close collaboration with Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Oversee the recruitment/interviewing/hiring process of faculty and fellows.
  • Evaluate graduates along with faculty for the Teaching Fellows program and Clinic Associate position.
  • Provide creative oversight in program development.
  • Develop and implement evaluation processes for both faculty and trainees.
  • Participate in due process required for faculty and trainees as described in the current policies and procedures manual.
  • Provide academic advisement and support to trainees/externs:
  • Consider creating other opportunities for trainee’s through collaboration with community agencies.
  • Coordinate with Clinical Directors for appropriate case assignment.
  • Partner with the Directors of the Social Work & Diversity Program (SWD) to:
  • Review and evaluate DSW students' experience.
  • Build community and bridges between DSW students, other trainees, and faculty.
  • • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Publications in the field of family therapy.
  • A body of work where their thinking and ideas will contribute to the training program.
  • A licensed degree in one of the mental health professions (Masters or PhD).
  • Experience includes supervision of minimum 10-15, excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, management and leadership skills and conflict resolution.
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in a leadership role.
  • Knowledge of clinical policies and procedures.
  • A strong interest in the development of family therapists and leaders in the field.
  • Extensive clinical and teaching experience in family therapy.
  • Commitment to Ackerman Institute values of inclusion, collaboration, and transparency.
  • Availability to work flexible hours including evenings when priorities shift or during crisis situations.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with the President, Leadership Team, faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • Ability to embrace multiple perspectives.
  • Personal presence and ability to speak about the training program.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Benefits

  • This position is currently remote due to Covid-19. When the Institute re-opens (TBD), this position will be based out of The Ackerman Institute’s New York, NY location.
  • This position is four days (32 hours) a week with the possibility of 40hrs (full-time) once trained and acclimated.
  • Opportunity to work in the Clinic or conduct private practice on Friday by renting office space at the Institute, subject to availability.
