Youth Specialist

Job Description:

The New York State Youth Justice Institute (hereafter the Institute) is seeking to hire a Youth Specialist to establish and lead its inaugural Youth Advisory Board. The Youth Advisory Board will provide meaningful feedback and advice to our State agency partners, NYS localities, and other stakeholders, and will include systems-involved youth from across NY State. The successful candidate will also assist in the professional development of diverse cohorts of graduate and undergraduate students admitted for internships at the Institute. 

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, and in close collaboration with the Associate for Training and Technical Assistance, the responsibilities of the Youth Specialist include:

  • Planning and executing multiple aspects of the Youth Advisory Board:
  • Completing the design of the Youth Advisory Board's structure, mission, and curriculum
  • Developing a web-based application portal
  • Developing and implementing a recruitment plan and selection processes
  • Providing onboarding support and training to members
  • Organizing and facilitating meetings as well as other daily tasks
  • Conducting continuous quality improvement assessments to ensure the Youth Advisory Board meets the need of youth participants and the YJI's partners and stakeholders
  • Assisting in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Participating in meetings with State and local-level partners and stakeholders
  • Performing special assignments and other related duties as assigned


Requirements:

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in social work or an equivalent field such as education, psychology, public health, or counseling plus 3-5 years of relevant experience OR a Bachelor's in social work or equivalent field plus 7+ years of professional youth support experience
  • Substantive knowledge of juvenile justice and emerging adulthood practices and policy in the United States
  • Experience working with and providing mentorship and support to youth, preferably emerging adults
  • Substantive knowledge of and experience in youth development principles and trauma-informed practices
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to multiple assignments and priorities supporting multiple projects and activities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, oral and written communication skills, and advanced interpersonal and relationship-building skills working in a team environment
  • Comfort with technology in all forms?for communication, project management, and content creation. (e.g., Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams, and social media)
  • Commitment to the Institute-wide principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the position
  • Ability to work outside of traditional office hours to accommodate youth availability
  • Ability to occasionally travel in State for conferences, meetings, and/or training opportunities

Preferred qualifications:

  • Valid NYS Licensed Master Social Worker
  • Strong commitment to social justice and youth leadership development and empowerment
  • Candidates with personal/family lived experience in the justice system are encouraged to apply
  • Strong cultural competency regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, and other social identities, with an existing ability to communicate and collaborate with people across lines of difference
  • Fluency in English is required. Bilingual or ASL skills are highly desired
  • A one-year commitment is required with the possible option to continue contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
