Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world. By 2030, Repair will inspire and catalyze one million acts of service towards repairing the world.

Repair the World’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in Atlanta, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Detroit, Harlem, Miami, and Pittsburgh. In 2015, Repair the World NYC was launched and opened a storefront community space, called “The Workshop”on Nostrand Ave in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.  The Workshop serves as a hub for our work in Central Brooklyn, operating primarily a workspace for our Fellows by day and a vibrant event space for all Brooklynites during evenings and weekends. The Workshop has shifted to be a disaster relief distribution center in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  In 2017, Repair the World launched in Harlem, developing an incredible partnership with the JCC Harlem and numerous service partners throughout the neighborhood. 

Program Overview

Over one-third of Repair the World NYC’s volunteer engagement involves families with children and teens. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a massive increase in both the need for volunteers and in volunteer engagement. Repair the World NYC piloted a successful four week Teen Virtual Service Corps in the summer of 2020 to engage teens more deeply in the work of supporting our communities through this time of increased need. 

Repair the World NYC is expanding its teen work by launching a twelve week service learning program for a Manhattan based cohort and a Brooklyn based cohort this spring, beginning in late February. In the summer, Repair the World will build on the spring program to implement a six week program with new cohorts in Manhattan, Brooklyn and in additional NY regions.

Spring cohort participants will engage in approximately three hours of programming per week and the summer cohort will engage in approximately ten hours of programming per week. Programming will primarily include virtual service, learning and community building as well as at least one socially distant in-person service opportunity per month, following COVID precaution protocols. 

Position Overview

Repair the World is seeking a part-time Manhattan Teen Program Coordinator for the upcoming spring and summer Manhattan based cohorts. This position is part-time between 20 -25 hours per week.

The coordinator will work under Repair the World NYC’s Family & Youth Program Manager and Repair the World NYC’s Executive Director to recruit program participants, implement the curriculum, identify volunteer opportunities, coordinate with local service partners. 

The successful candidate will be a flexible self-starter who excels at building relationships with teens, parents, and key community stakeholders; has a proven ability to manage, and facilitate service learning; is skilled at teaching and building community online and is excited about leading innovative programming to engage teens in meaningful ways and to respond to the needs of marginalized and vulnerable neighbors.

Position Responsibilities 

• Coordinate the Manhattan teen cohort program: 
• recruit up to 25 participants each season
• hold relationships with teens and parents
• coordinate virtual and socially distant in-person teen volunteer opportunities 
• visit service sites to ensure COVID protocols are enforced and that service opportunities are strong matches for teen volunteers
• lead weekly online learning and community building sessions for teens
• Collaborate with Repair the World NYC staff to build teen opportunities in ongoing programming
• Contribute to Repair the World NYC’s growing teen work by building relationships with service sites in need of youth volunteers  

Position Requirements

Required Experience & Skills

• Proven ability to connect with Jewish youth, families, and people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Direct youth management experience 
• Excellent facilitator of educational programming and Jewish service learning for teens
• Training and experience in education, especially informal and experiential
• Sophisticated awareness of poverty, structural racism, power and privilege and ability to discuss these issues with diverse groups in ways that empower and open people to learning 
• Understanding of and strong commitment to volunteerism and service best practices
• Ability to apply lessons learned in real time, and to course-correct accordingly
• Deep familiarity with Manhattan Jewish communities and with existing and/or potential service sites

Compensation

This is a grant funded, part-time position for 20-25 hours/week at a starting rate of $20 per hour. The position starts as early as January 11 and ends in late August a week after the program ends. (The teen program runs July 12-August 20.)
