About GrowNYC School Gardens

GrowNYC School Gardens was established in 2010 to promote the creation of a sustainable learning garden at all DOE public and charter K-12 schools citywide. Our annual offering of 40+ workshops, giveaways, technical assistance, and mini grants have helped over 800 schools start gardens. Seed to Plate, our nutrition education program for 5th and 6th graders, tells the story of local food and why it’s important for our bodies, the environment, and our community, inspiring healthy food choices and environmental leaders. 


 Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to) The Seed to Plate program will serve eight schools between September and December 2021. The Nutrition Education Coordinator will: 

 • Schedule and coordinate the ten-lesson curriculum at each location for each participating classroom.

• Support teachers, schedule and manage educators, and teach select lessons to individual classrooms for each school.

• Coordinate field trips and program materials for selected schools, including trips to GrowNYC greenmarkets, farmer visits, and agricultural field trips.

• Obtain and prepare food for individual lesson tastings and cooking demos from GrowNYC offices or at Greenmarket locations

• Create teaching materials to prepare selected teachers to utilize the Seed to Plate program in their schools during the fall of 2021.

• Deliver teacher training workshops at each of the schools in the early fall.

• Support teachers as needed

• Create and send follow-up evaluation materials to participating teachers to fulfill grant requirements. 


Qualifications: 

• Teaching experience with elementary school students in an urban setting is a must.

• Experience working in the New York City public school system

• Culinary background or home cooking skills

• Appreciation of fresh, local and seasonal ingredients

• Valid NYS Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record

• Lift and carry supplies up to 50lbs. 


NOTE: All offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of the DOE Eligibility Clearance Procedures, which include, but are not limited to, DOE fingerprinting procedures and background investigations, as well as school reopening as planned in September. 


Position Details Funding: Seed to Plate has been generously funded by a private foundation, with the possibility of extension pending beyond December 2021.


Schedule: This position is full-time (35 hours per week), seasonal, Monday-Friday, field-based position working in NYC K12 schools throughout the five boroughs. Majority of time will be spent engaging school partners with some work from home and in-office time as needed. The position runs from September 1, 2021 – December 15, 2021.


Compensation: $25 per hour
