Founded in 2004, the mission of Urban Upbound is to break cycles of poverty in public housing neighborhoods by providing youth and adults the tools and resources needed to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency. Urban Upbound advances its mission through five integrated programs: employment services, financial counseling, income support services, community revitalization, and access to safe and affordable banking through the Urban Upbound Federal Credit Union. Our services are reared in the Jobs-Plus model, a proven place-based employment program designed to increase the earnings and employment of working age public housing residents. Jobs-Plus uses a three-pronged approach which includes: employment-related services; financial incentives that make work pay; and community supports for work, the strengthening of social ties among residents and community stakeholders to support residents' job preparation and work efforts.


Urban Upbound seeks a workforce development professional to join our dedicated team as a Community Service Coordinator. Candidates must be capable of successfully developing, managing and tracking community service and internship assignments. The Community Service Coordinator provides a range of counseling and coaching services that are tailored to the needs of individual participants and makes the appropriate referrals to community based organizations for community service and internship opportunities. The Community Service Coordinator is someone who is flexible, open and caring to the greater population. You will be on the front lines of poverty alleviation, working with an innovative city organization, which is constantly changing and evolving its tactics towards tackling poverty in NYC. The ideal candidate would have individualized case management experience with clients from diverse economic, cultural and social backgrounds including low to moderate income.  

 

Responsibilities:

·        Tracking all community service/internship sites and slots- information includes name of organization, address of organization, contact person name, contact person email and phone number, whether it is a community service opportunity or internship opportunity, number of community service or internship slots, requirements of the community service/internship slots, referral process, available positions and hours;

·        Entering all community service/internship sites and slots into a funder required repository;

·        Ongoing contact with providers to update changes in requirements for each community service internship slot;

·        Accepting referrals from program staff for placement in a community service /internship slot;

·        Scheduling interviews for participants as required by community service providers and track outcome of interview;

·        Placing and tracking appropriate participants into each community service/internship slot according to requirements;

·        Communicating each person’s assignment and scheduling to assigned service coordinator;

·        Providing monthly report of all community service/internship slots and assignments to management;

·        Communicating weekly with Community Organizations to verify attendance and submitting a weekly attendance report submitted by Community Organization;

·        Escalating any potential issues/concerns with the community providers to the Director immediately;

·        Developing new community service/internship opportunities and work with provider to secure MOU and funder approval;

·        Submitting other reports as required by funder;

·        Participating in monthly meetings with management

·        Complying with the funder’s regulations and bulletins.

·        Other tasks as assigned by the Director and Urban Upbound leadership.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree- required
  • Prior work experience working with low income communities helpful
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred
  • Must be based in NYC Metropolitan area and able to travel between offices
  • Willingness to travel is a must (drive or use mass transit)


Preferred Qualities:

  • Prior experience working with low income population, including low income youth (18-24)
  • Commitment to helping social empowerment and economic development
  • Genuine passion about workforce development is essential, although advanced knowledge on topics may be learned on the job
  • Client focus and adaptability to different personality types and age groups
  • Independent self-starter with strong teamwork abilities, as you will be given a lot of autonomy in managing your own clientele
  • Flexibility in working towards the larger mission of Urban Upbound, as this may involve a lot of experimentation in approaches to working with clients and referrals to other programs
  • Creativity in your approaches to working with people. Ideas are welcome here, including on improving client service delivery through technology, integration and communication methods
