IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, Inc., www.irisct.org), a dynamic refugee resettlement agency in New Haven CT, has an opening for the full-time position of Manager of Youth Programs and Education Advocacy. IRIS helps people fleeing persecution in their home countries to start new lives and become self-sufficient contributing members of their communities. IRIS currently serves clients from countries such as Afghanistan, DR Congo, Iran, Sudan and Syria.



General Description


The Manager of Youth Services and Education Advocacy (MYSEA) supports the aspirations of refugee, asylee, and immigrant families to access educational opportunities and schooling in the greater New Haven area. The MYSEA manages summer and in-school tutoring programs that expand upon clients’ academic and social progress. As manager of the Public Education About Refugees program, the MYSEA also raises awareness of refugees and their experiences through events, presentations, and workshops. Finally, the MYSEA provides targeted tutoring and intervention to high-need students.


Specific Duties

 

           Summer Learning Program

 

           Coordinates and facilitates daily programming for 70-100 recently-arrived refugee students between the ages of 5 and 16 who are enrolled in the IRIS Summer Learning Program


           Oversees a team of lead and assistant teachers, interns, and volunteers who implement the instructional and enrichment goals of the SLP; guides lead and assistant teachers with trainings and support for curriculum design and management strategies

           

           Assesses and meets daily needs of SLP students by creating the best possible learning environment


           Organizes recreational opportunities and field trips to sites around the New Haven area; facilitates visitations to the program from local individuals and organizations; communicates with managers of similar programs to share and develop best practices


           Writes post-SLP reports and analysis to highlight best practices and areas of growth for the coming years; maintains a database of volunteers, visitors, and partnering institutions who wish to work with the SLP in coming years

 

 

 

 

           In-School tutoring


           Oversees the operation of an in-school tutoring team that includes at least 20 volunteer and intern in-school tutors


           Liaises with schools to pair capable tutors with students in need of extra support; works with tutors and school administrators to ensure that services are delivered in a way that best serves students’ needs


           Executes site visits to schools to observe tutors and offer constructive feedback

Provides tutors with curricular and material support


           Tracks student performance via grade reports to ensure that in-school tutoring is positively impacting students’ academic growth



           Public Outreach and Education


           Facilitates presentations and workshops in New Haven and the surrounding areas to educate people about refugees and offer them the opportunity to hear the stories of IRIS clients


           Works with local educators to develop unit and lesson plans about refugees and their experiences


           

           Youth Leadership and Mentorship


           Co-plans and facilitates weekly workshops with high school-age refugee and immigrant youth to build college and career readiness skills and support students with their personal, professional, and academic goals


           Facilitates weekly sessions with high school-age refugee and immigrant youth to encourage fellowship and explore issues related to identity and culture


           Extracurricular Support


           Builds and maintains relationships with citywide organizations and learning institutions to ensure that eligible and willing IRIS clients are enrolled in quality after-school programs; informs parents and students about after-school and extracurricular opportunities



Supervises:   Volunteer in-school tutors, interns, SLP staff


Reports to:   Director of Education Services


 

Requirements

Candidates must have:

·     at least 3 years of professional experience in service-oriented field

·     ability to manage a team, strong leadership qualities,

·     strong communication and organization skills,

·     meticulousness and attention to detail,

·     ability to develop and monitor spending according to determined budgets

·     ability to handle multiple demands and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment,

·     commitment to anti-racism and IRIS’ mission

·     ability to quickly establish and maintain a good rapport with various types of clientele,

·     ability to set limits with clients and enforce strict policies,

·     fluency in spoken and written English,

·     strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and Google suite; ability to manipulate basic spreadsheets,

·     US driver’s license, insurance, good driving record. 


Ideal candidates will have:

·     experience managing a team and/or a social service program,

·     experience with youth-facing (or youth-serving) organizations

·     experience working with refugees or other immigrant populations or related personal experience,

·     knowledge of the US refugee resettlement program generally

·     proficiency in another language (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Swahili especially)
