    Description

    The Position: 

    A full-time, salaried position, the Development Officer supports the development team by managing development communications, leading major donor research and prospecting efforts, and supporting the major giving pipeline through donor relationship development, stewardship, and solicitation.

    In collaboration with other business and editorial staff, the Development Officer will contribute directly to reach our ambitious fundraising goals and ensure that a major digital news organization is sustainable for years to come. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Development and will work closely with the senior leadership team. While primarily remote, the position may require some travel and evening and weekend responsibilities to be successful.

    Development/Major Gifts

    • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Development to conduct prospecting and establish robust engagement plans for stewardship and solicitation of members and prospects, with the goal of adding to our pipeline of major giving supporters and increasing giving levels;
    • Establish efficient wealth screening process to identify first-time donors with significant capacity for an alternative engagement strategy using existing CRMs (Salesforce and ActionKit) and wealth screening tool (iWave);
    • Collaborate with the Business Coordinator to ensure data hygiene of development pledges and gifts;
    • Event leadership: in-person & virtual event logistics implementation when needed, coordination with event project manager, and post-event analysis;
    • Manage campaigns and campaign resources, including the annual report and occasional mailings.

    Data Management & Documentation

    • Create and manage donor database reports with the CRM systems (Salesforce and ActionKit) to support major-donor fundraising goals, collaborating with the membership, product, and analytics to ensure data integrity and accuracy in reporting.
    • Manage internal development documentation, including the Development Handbook.

    Background & Qualifications:

    • 3-5+ years of experience in some combination of digital media, journalism, and/or nonprofit fundraising.
    • Demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
    • Respect and passion for The Intercept’s investigative mission, and knowledge of its place within the wider media landscape.
    • Proven meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. 
    • Proven strong research and problem solving skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle sensitive information and manage confidentiality.
    • Strong interpersonal and proven project management skills; able to collaborate successfully with colleagues at varying levels of seniority and ensure that deadlines are met.
    • Demonstrated track record of developing productive working relationships across a wide variety of individuals and groups, virtually and in person, including with reporters and editors throughout the organization.
