Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties is a 100 year old not-for profit social enterprise. Our organization’s mission is to create second chances through training and the dignity of work. The Director of Marketing will steward the Goodwill brand across all channels and media. The position is responsible for brand development, market intelligence, internal and external communications across multiple platforms and the development of compelling success stories. This is a highly collaborative and visible position responsible for developing and driving a smart, service-oriented team dedicated to raising the visibility of our mission and supporting the needs of our retail, eCommerce, donations and development teams. Strategizing and implementing marketing and communication projects, social and digital media campaigns, stakeholder management and creating written and visual thought-provoking content. The Director of Marketing directly reports to the Vice President of Brand, Marketing and Communications.


  • Increase store traffic and drive sales to meet and exceed retail budget goals
  • Act as brand and mission steward for overall organizational messaging and as spokesperson when needed
  • Establish strategic partnerships with key media, social media influencers and thought leaders
  • Develop and oversee CEO communications: internal and external
  • Ensure the development of advertising and promotional plans and manage the annual advertising and promotional budget
  • Develop experiential marketing campaigns that build customer/material donor engagement and support for the Goodwill brand
  • Build Goodwill’s e-commerce online brands and increase both traffic and sales
  • Manage the use of external resources as they pertain to the marketing and communications function (advertising agency, public affairs resources, crisis communications support, etc.)
  • Create a Success Stories portfolio resource that brings the mission to life through external platforms: website, social media, influencer campaigns
  • Oversee the production of Goodwill’s annual report
  • Partner with internal program leaders in support of initiatives and goals and identify consistent measuring strategies and tools to analyze growth/success
  • Identify and adopt current and future marketing technologies to measure and grow: engagement, SEO, channels/distribution and CRM.
  • Develop strategies for increasing SEO and brand reputation through SEM using Google Analytics, Google Adwords, leading SEO tools and YELP!
  • Focus on growth tactics for email database and social followings that includes pilots and A/B tests to analyze conversion metrics; manage segmentation
  • Implement website best practices and UI with compelling call to action
  • Leverage donation sites and in-store POS touch points for data collection
  • Draft press releases/media advisories and develop relationships with local media
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • College Degree BS or BA in Communications, Marketing, Business or related discipline
  • Minimum of Eight (8 - 10) years in Marketing/Brand/Communications Management
  • Eight (8) years of experience in leading and supervising the work of direct reports.
  • Experience in retail, lifestyle brands, public relations or related industries is preferred


  • Knowledge of and demonstrated expertise with online marketing (social media, viral, experiential, digital, mobile, re-targeted advertising) and traditional media (print, broadcast direct mail)
  • Skilled in both branding and launching/rebranding products and services to consumers
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency with, and ability to utilize Salesforce database management
  • Commitment and demonstrated ability to develop high-quality work products
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution of detailed marketing efforts
  • Ability to maintain highest levels of confidentiality
  • Excellent in-person, phone, and electronic-based interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups of individuals from a variety of educational, social and economic backgrounds
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to influence and partner/collaborate with others. Must be highly collaborative and open to multiple perspectives
  • Ability to utilize self-learning systems
  • Proficiency with, and ability to conduct, intermediate to advanced tasks within Microsoft Office Suite applications and various cloud based office applications
  • Possess a professional demeanor, poise under pressure with strong attention to detail, and well-developed time management skills
  • Respects and has knowledge of cultures, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientations and age groups other than one’s own, able to work effectively with all
