Admissions Counselor

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) seeks to appoint an Admissions Counselor who will be responsible for the recruiting and selection of qualified students for admission to fill all OTS education programs. This position reports to the Enrollment Management Director.

Organizational Relationships:

Reports to:  Enrollment Management Director

Coordinates with: Dean of Academic Programs, Director of Academics in Costa Rica, Curriculum Director in South Africa, and Admissions Specialist. Works closely with all levels of professional staff and faculty within the organization. Develops and maintains positive relationships with higher education institutions as appropriate for the recruitment of a diverse student population. Maintains liaison with nationally recognized professional organizations.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

1. Implementing recruitment and admissions strategies; this includes travel throughout the United States to conduct campus visits, participate in study abroad fairs and represent OTS at study abroad conferences.
2. Developing and implementing social media and marketing strategies that promote OTS enrollment efforts. This may include campus postering, student phone calls, e-mail campaigns, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other mediums as created.
3. Managing student inquiries. Communicate directly with students from their initial inquiry to participation in an OTS course. Follow-up on every prospect.
4. Managing and tracking student applications including all forms required by OTS.
5. Facilitating the evaluation and awarding of scholarship aid to students.
6. Communicating student information to appropriate OTS programs and staff.
7. Accurately maintaining individual travel budget.
8. Maintaining detailed reports on all recruiting activities.
9. Actively participating in all staff training and development events.
10. Maintaining a positive attitude and display willingness to be an effective team member.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Biology, Environmental Science or Ecology) and 2 years experience in international education or study abroad. OTS Alumni are encouraged to apply.
2. Ability to be an effective team member and to work individually.
3. Proficiency in use of computers and new technologies.
4. Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
5. Familiar with social media engagement strategies.
6. Highly organized with ability to multi-task.
7. Ability to work a flexible schedule and to travel extensively during major recruiting seasons (September 1 – November 15, January 15 – April 1).
8. Results-oriented individual with strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
9. History of working successfully in a team.
10. Ability to speak Spanish is an asset.
11. Familiarity with South Africa, Costa Rica, and/or living or working outside of U.S.

This is a full-time position based at OTS’ North American Office in Durham, NC.
