Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven (NHS) was incorporated in 1979 with a mission to revitalize and stabilize select residential neighborhoods in the City of New Haven and to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to families with low and moderate incomes. Our affordable housing development activities, along with our commitment to historic preservation and energy conservation have made NHS unique among nonprofit housing developers in New Haven. We have always maintained a commitment to Community Building and Organizing, which plays a major role in the revitalization of distressed residential neighborhoods.

In 2001, NHS opened the New Haven HomeOwnership Center (HOC) as an NHS subsidiary to provide prospective homeowners with extensive pre- and post-purchase homebuyer education and foreclosure intervention assistance. The combined mission of Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven and the New Haven HomeOwnership Center is to stabilize and revitalize New Haven's neighborhoods through increased homeownership; to develop affordable housing for families with low and moderate incomes; to provide homebuyer education and financial/credit counseling to prospective homebuyers; and to preserve homeownership by providing loss mitigation counseling and foreclosure intervention assistance to homeowners in danger of losing their homes.
