About the Southeast Senior Communications Manager

The Working Families Party is seeking an experienced communications professional to join our team and help tell our story. We are seeking a senior communications manager who can develop and drive earned media strategies nationally and for our Southeast chapters. The right candidate will have extensive experience with media relations and strategy and they will possess excellent written and organizational skills. Our ideal candidate is Spanish-language fluent and has experience working with Spanish-language press. 

This position is remote but must be willing to travel to states in the Southeastern US when needed. Preference given to applicants who live or have experience working in the Southeastern region, particularly if they have communications experience in the South.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the Southeast Digital Organizer in carrying out a digital program for the region.
  • Manage Southeast Digital Organizer who focuses on writing and disseminating email blasts, social media posts, SMS / broadcast messages, etc. 
  • Manage communications and digital work for the Southeast region.
  • Develop and execute national and local media plans, including: Producing advocacy and electoral campaign message and strategy documents.
  • Preparing staff and organizers for earned media opportunities.
  • Building relationships and pitching journalists for coverage, features, and interviews.
  • Writing and/or reviewing press releases, media advisories, and statements.
  • Planning press events.
  • Drafting opinion pieces.
  • Writing talking points for staff and volunteers in preparation for earned and paid media, public statements, and public testimonies.
  • Creating and coordinating social media strategies, including paid media.
  • Maintaining regional press list to include local and state outlets.
  • Develop communications strategies to elevate WFP leaders as movement thought leaders.
  • Training staff in media strategies, including social and earned media.
  • Cultivating media relationships with key reporters.
  • Spokesperson training.
  • Coordinate with state and regional staff on electoral and issue campaigns as well as breaking news.
  • Identify and navigate state and local environments.
  • Manage crisis communications
  • Coordinate with electoral campaign staff and organizational partners on traditional and new media.
  • Coordinate and work with national WFP staff on social media strategies.
  • Work with national WFP staff to Identify national media opportunities for WFP state issue, candidate, and multi-state campaigns.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of communications experience and 2 years management experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • History working in the South.
  • Knowledge about the history of resistance in the Southeast.
  • Experience working with press in the South.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Ability to react quickly and manage competing priorities without dropping balls.
  • Flexibility, patience, and willingness to “roll with the punches” as days can be unpredictable as news breaks or opportunities arise.
  • A sense of humor.
  • Commitment to building a multiracial working-class movement to save the world.
  • Spanish language skills are a big plus for this role. 

What Else Should You Know?

Compensation: $55,000 - $75,000/yr depending on experience. The final salary will be based on an internal equitable scale that takes into consideration years of experience, geographic location, and final job description. Location: This position can be remotely based, but some travel to the U.S. Southeast Region will be required.

Union Affiliation: WFP is a unionized workplace. This is a managerial role that is not eligible to join WFP's staff bargaining unit. WFP's union employees are represented by the New York Metropolitan Area Joint Board, Workers United union.
