Organisation Overview

Blue Ventures develops locally led approaches to marine management that benefit people and nature alike. By listening and responding to basic needs, we design our models to catalyse and sustain marine conservation, unlocking the potential of coastal communities to manage their resources. We work in places where the ocean is vital to local cultures and economies, and are committed to advancing the rights of small-scale fishers throughout the coastal tropics.

Summary Job Description

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) is a vital cyclical process within conservation programming which helps us to learn about what is and isn’t working for communities and the environment. By implementing this process, we are able to refine our programming and contribute to improved conservation outcomes.

The Blue Ventures MEL team is focused on working with field staff and managers to develop and support them with the right methods, tools and systems to collect the information needed for adaptive management.

The National Lead for MEL is responsible for providing leadership in the development and implementation of monitoring, evaluation and learning across Blue Ventures’ conservation programmes and sites throughout Madagascar. The MEL position will be managed by the Head of Programmes, Madagascar, and the Global Head of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (based in the UK). Working closely with the conservation team in the UK, site leaders and programme technical leads in Madagascar, the National Lead for MEL will be responsible for supporting teams to develop site and programme level plans that follow Blue Ventures’ broader MEL framework.

The National Lead for MEL will be responsible for engaging teams in the MEL process, ensuring systems are fit for purpose and improving them where necessary, for example, identifying where new technologies can support improved efficiency. He or she will also support key processes for data management and ensure teams have access to the information they need to make programmatic decisions and report on activities and results to communities, partners, authorities, and funders.

The National Lead for MEL will be responsible for making sure lessons learned from sites and programmes in Madagascar are shared to other sites in Madagascar and to the wider BV organisation.
