The Opportunity

Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus (Advancing Justice - ALC)  seeks an Accounting Supervisor. This new position will lead the day-to-day accounting operations of Advancing Justice - ALC. The Accounting Supervisor’s responsibilities include managing the monthly accounting cycle, closing the general ledger (including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll), participating in financial planning and budgeting, grants administration, audit preparation and managing banking and vendor relationships. The role is responsible for all accounting and reporting systems to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the financial data and compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards. This is a hands-on accounting position which requires a close knowledge of Advancing Justice - ALC’s business flows to manage the day-to-day operations of approving 

The Accounting Supervisor reports to the Finance Director and works closely with the program and development staff and senior management. The Accounting Supervisor is responsible for implementing systems and procedures that ensure appropriate internal controls, and risk management to conduct flawless audits and support effective program implementation.


The Organization

Advancing Justice – ALC is the nation’s first legal organization focusing on advancing and defending the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (APIs). Since 1972, Advancing Justice – ALC has litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color. Current program areas include National Security and Civil Rights, Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Rights, Housing Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, and Voting Rights.


Advancing Justice-ALC is based in San Francisco, a hub of the Asian American rights movement, progressive politics, and social justice activism. Our location in Chinatown is the first mixed-use, affordable housing co-op in San Francisco, serving as a model for preserving affordable housing in the city and protecting tenants’ rights.


Day-to-day responsibilities this dynamic position vary, and include, but are not limited to, the following

  • Accounts payable, coding cash receipts, managing revenue recognition, and overseeing payroll. 
  • Closely monitoring and managing the utilization and reporting of restricted funds to optimize utilization while strictly adhering to donor intent.
  • Under direct supervision of the Finance Director, overseeing the bookkeeping and accounting contractor(s); provide back-up as needed.
  • Managing the monthly, quarterly and annual close cycles to generate timely, accurate and relevant internal and external financial statements.
  • Maintaining internal control safeguards for revenue receipts, payments, and program budgets to protect the organization from the risk of error, fraud, and security breaches.
  • Creating invoices to our multiple government grants and private funders throughout the year.
  • Managing all program, project, and grant accounting; ensure all expenditures consistent with approved grant and program budgets, compliant with the Federal, State and local grant agreements and regulatory requirements such as the OMB Uniform Administrative Requirements.
  • Coordinating the preparation for financial audits and IRS 990 filings.
  • Serving as primary liaison to the external auditors through the audit process.
  • Assisting the Finance Director and senior management in the budgeting and planning process.
  • Managing the accounting for reserves, donor-restricted funds and developing cash flow forecasting models to maintain financial stability and manage seasonal and long-term cash needs.
  • Working with the Finance Director to manage Advancing Justice - ALC’s financial and accounting policies and procedures and maintain appropriate records and up-to-date documentation and compliance with GAAP.
  • Managing the tracking and accounting for fixed assets and other real and personal property.
  • Performing additional projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field or 3+ years equivalent work experience.
  • At least three (3+) years of experience in an accounting role.
  • Knowledge of non-profit GAAP Accounting practices and procedures.
  • Experience in federal, state and local grant administration with strong knowledge of Federal OMB CFR-200 requirements.
  • Experience with creating and monitoring organizational budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating internal controls.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite.
  • Experience with ADP or equivalent payroll service as well as Quickbooks and/or other accounting software.
  • Prior accounting experience with nonprofits, highly desired


Compensation and Benefits 

Starting salary for this position is $85,000 per year; salary is based on years of relevant experience and principles of internal equity.
