ABOUT THIRD COAST

The Third Coast International Audio Festival (“Third Coast”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization based in Chicago, IL, whose mission is to inspire artistic innovation in audio documentary and storytelling, support the maker community and advocate for critical recognition for the field of audio.

Founded in 2000, Third Coast is an independent, community-driven arts organization and a leader in the field of audio. Third Coast fulfills its mission through year-round programming, including:

  • The Third Coast Conference, the preeminent gathering in the field of audio, bringing over 800 producers, editors, publishers, and industry leaders annually to Chicago.
  • Awards and public curation, particularly the Third Coast / Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition - the most well-respected juried competition for audio storytelling, which annually awards winners across eight categories.
  • Celebrated radio programs and podcasts, including: Re:soundPocket ConferenceBest of the BestRe:sound airs nationally throughout the year and weekly on WBEZ in Chicago.
  • ThirdCoastFestival.org, home to the most richly curated archive of stories and the most comprehensive index of audio producers in the world.
  • The Third Coast Radio Residency for underrepresented voices in the field, as well as other equity & community accountability initiatives such as the Conference volunteer program, the newly- formed advisory group, and more.

Third Coast’s programming activates and inspires through connection, innovation, critical perspective, and a radical rethinking of the boundaries of audio storytelling and the context in which this work is made. Third Coast fosters access, equity, and creative expression in an ever-changing artistic landscape and industry.

 

OVERVIEW OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION AT THIRD COAST

The Executive Director (ED) bears responsibility for the executive, strategic, financial, and management functions of Third Coast. The ED reports to and works closely with the Third Coast International Audio Festival’s Board of Directors on Board and organizational development, strategy, and policy making. The ED serves as a passionate representative of the organization whose primary charge is to uphold and articulate Third Coast’s mission and vision to the broader audio industry, and beyond.

Third Coast is looking for a deft and strategic leader, fundraiser, and administrator to build the capacity of the organization. An understanding of the field of audio is valuable but not essential; a passion for supporting a diverse field of makers is paramount to the success of this job.

The ED will be working with an experienced core staff that is dedicated to growing the capacity of Third Coast and is passionate about the unique role Third Coast plays in the audio storytelling field. The Third Coast staff is a small team that collectively and collaboratively leads Third Coast’s inclusive, community-driven, and people-focused programming. As such, Third Coast seeks an ED who is driven by reflecting the values of the community in their day-to-day work.

 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Grow Third Coast’s leadership position in the audio industry and beyond.

  • Oversee implementation of Third Coast's programming and lead/collaborate with staff (and stakeholders) in ongoing development and reshaping of key programming initiatives.
  • Raise the profile, reputation, and visibility of Third Coast locally, nationally, and internationally. Maintain and forge collaborative partnerships with key industry players in audio storytelling, including public media, for-profit podcasting companies, major universities, and other journalistic and arts institutions. Maintain and forge strategic relationships and organizational visibility among nonprofits in Chicago (including Chicago Public Media).
  • Serve as an ambassador of the organization by attending conferences, industry events, and participating in relevant speaking engagements. Inspires, motivates, and supports staff to be ambassadors of Third Coast in the audio industry and beyond.

Organizational leadership

  • Work with Board of Directors and staff to develop strategic plan(s) to guide Third Coast's programming efforts and initiatives in the rapidly evolving field of radio/podcasting.
  • Lead growth of the organization through transparent and cooperative decision-making, hiring & resourcing staff strategically, encouraging/providing professional development opportunities, and managing a fair distribution of duties.
  • Keep the Board of Directors fully informed on conditions, opportunities and challenges for the organization and the environment in which it operates so that the Board can carry out its governance, financial oversight and leadership role.
  • Foster a collaborative organizational culture that encourages new ideas, celebrates success, honors diversity, strives for excellence and focuses on sustainable growth.
  • Support staff in executing programming through strategic project management and a focus on new resources, scalability and growth.

Ensure long-term financial direction & plan for growth for the organization

  • Develop a broad-based and diversified fundraising strategy through foundations, individual donors, corporate sponsors, Board cultivation, and partnerships. Work with staff and Board of Directors to implement strategy.
  • Establish long-lasting relationships with existing funders, sponsors and donors. Identify and build relationships with prospective funding sources.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Brings a meaningful depth of experience working with arts, media, journalism, education or philanthropic organizations.
  • Demonstrated track-record of successful fundraising and donor development, and nonprofit financial management. Familiarity with grant-writing and administration of grants. (Knowledge of the Chicago and greater Midwest funder landscape is a plus.)
  • Interest in the field of audio storytelling and/or documentary (though deep knowledge of the industry is not required).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
