$40,000 - $42,000This is a full-time position, with a beginning salary of $40,000-$42,000, depending on experience.

The Experimental Station fosters a dynamic ecology of innovative educational and cultural programs, small business enterprises and community initiatives. Since 2006, we have both built our own programming to address local needs and have fostered, hosted, and sponsored many other initiatives. Current programs include Blackstone Bicycle Works, Link Up Illinois, 61st Street Farmers Market, small business incubation, and public arts and cultural events. We are currently seeking a 61st Street Farmers Market Manager who will be central to the management and development of the 61st Street Farmers Market.


61st Street Farmers Market Manager Position Objective

The Market Manager will be responsible for the development and proper functioning of the 61st Street Farmers Market, a year-round farmers market primarily serving the Woodlawn and Hyde Park communities, and its food education program. The Market Manager will be hired by and will report to the Experimental Station Executive Director.


The responsibilities of the Market Manager include the following:

Market Management

  • Overseeing day-to-day matters of the market
  • Overseeing market days, including set up, clean up, parking, security, farmer/vendor management, and market programming oversight
  • Overseeing the Link/EBT and Credit/Debit redemption system, assisting Market Cashier when necessary
  • Improving the atmosphere of the market through positive interaction with shoppers, vendors, and volunteers


Market Administration

  • Collecting and handling fees from producers
  • Maintaining permits, licensing, insurance
  • Implementing the Market‘s annual budget to break even
  • Working with the City of Chicago to ensure proper licensing and permitting


Market Development

  • Recruiting farmers to standards set by the Experimental Station Executive Director 
  • Ensuring product mix and variety to meet community needs and market success
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with farmers and vendors 
  • Allocating space to farmers and vendors at the market
  • Developing and organizing market programming (i.e. weekly Market School, chef demonstrations,  health initiatives, music, entertainment, etc.)
  • Networking at various conferences, trainings, and annual meetings 


Food Education

  • Coordinating and instructing a garden-to-plate food education program with elementary students, including in-school workshops, gardening classes, and coordinating chef-instructed cooking classes
  • Providing adult food education through tastings and gardening
  • Hiring and managing a Food Education Assistant and Head Gardener during growing season


Community Outreach

  • Building and maintaining relationships with the local community
  • Conducting tastings and other on-the-ground outreach at local human services offices


Volunteer Management

  • Recruiting and managing market volunteers
  • Managing market interns when applicable


Standards Enforcement

  • Enforcing standards for produce and products sold at market by visiting farms and producers
  • Enforcing adherence to health codes


Advertising/Marketing

  • Overseeing publicity and development of advertising campaign prior to and during the season
  • Working with a graphic designer to create marketing materials
  • Updating website and community event calendars
  • Maintaining active administration of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram social media accounts


Data Collection and Reporting

  • Tracking market metrics such as sales data, attendance, and food education on a weekly basis throughout the season
  • Reporting to Executive Director (ED) on Link and Link Match purchases
  • Collecting and reporting to ED on Food Education impact for grant reporting
  • Providing data for year-end infographic report


Expectations

  • Interest in advancing food accessibility and healthy neighborhood initiatives 
  • Ability to communicate clearly, with a detailed understanding of the Market’s mission and goals
  • Excellent social awareness and ability to relate well with a diverse community of constituents, including vendors, farmers, customers, students, and others
  • Interest in food education and a desire to teach
  • Exceptional initiative and follow-through skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage workload, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain, improve, and streamline existing systems/processes, and to create new systems/processes, as needed
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.


Experience

  • 2 years management experience
  • Experience in food-related industry
  • Gardening/farming experience preferred
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc) and GSuite
  • Proficient in all forms of social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) 
  • Valid driver's license and access to a car to drive to grantee locations (mileage reimbursed)
