Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The Windward School is currently seeking a Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.  This multicampus role with a home office in White Plains, NY will serve the school in an essential leadership role as a strategic planner, resource and advocate in the promotion of an inclusive school community where every member has a strong sense of belonging.  Given the importance of this role and its impact across all offices and constituents in the School, the Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will report directly to the Head of School.  The Director of DEI will work to build the framework of the overall DEI initiatives, including establishing goals and metrics to advance these efforts with deliberate intention.  This role will be a resource to all departments as we strive to view all procedures and practices through an equity lens.

·      A deep understanding of and a passion to support The Windward School’s mission, with a focus on a skillful understanding of the intersections between DEI and language-based learning disabilities   

·      An open, affirming and approachable attitude with regard to DEI work and efforts  

·      A proven commitment to cultivating an inclusive and culturally competent school environment where every member has a strong sense of belonging 

·      A readiness to embody Windward’s core values of commitment, growth, impact and community  

  

Duties and Responsibilities  

The Director of DEI will support students by: 

·      Creating and maintaining community partnerships in order to diversify and support our student body  

·      Serving on the Admissions and Tuition Assistance Committees in order to support equitable access to our School  

·      Serving on the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Committee and working closely with the Director of Language Arts and Instruction to ensure culturally responsive curriculum for all students  

·      Co-creating proactive DEI lessons with the Guidance Department on each campus  

·      Facilitating learning conversations when identity mistakes arise  

 

The Director of DEI will support families and alumni by: 

·      Working with the Windward Parents Association to help all Windward families understand the school’s commitment to DEI efforts  

·      Assisting the Advancement Department in supporting and networking with BIPOC alumni and LGBTQ+ alumni.  

·      Hosting regular diversity coffees for current families  

 

The Director of DEI will support faculty and staff by: 

·      Working with the Director of HR and Director of the Teacher Training Program to develop strategies for recruitment, hiring, training, and retaining a diverse faculty and staff body committed to advancing DEI at Windward  

·      Creating and maintaining community partnerships in order to diversify and support our faculty and staff body  

·      Creating and leading DEI professional development (monthly SEED seminars, Friday Professional Development sessions, coordinating outside speakers, etc.) 

·      Facilitating learning conversations when identity mistakes or microagressions arise 

 

The Director of DEI will support strategic planning by: 

·      Establishing and meeting periodic departmental DEI goals by collecting and analyzing relevant data  

·      Supervising the DEI Office (SEED co-facilitators and campus diversity advisors) and DivE In Committee (Board Members, faculty, staff, parents/guardians)  

·      Working in partnership with any relevant DEI Consultants, in achieving DEI goals  

·      Meeting regularly with our Communications Department to ensure representative and equitable community messaging  

 

The list above is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities, and like any other member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will, when necessary, be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Head of School.  

 

Specific Requirements  

·      Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred  

·      A minimum of three years of demonstrated success as a DEI practitioner, preferably in a school setting, or experience that is evidently equivalent and demonstrates the application of the standards and best practices of the field  

·      Team player with the capacity for developing affirming and positive working relationships with Windward community members  

·      A strategic approach to supporting institutional change  

·      Skillful management of the personal, political and institutional dynamics related to DEI  

·      Self-starter with strong interpersonal communications skills and the ability to have courageous conversations  

·      Excellent public speaking and presentation skills  

·      An attitude that fosters compassion, empathy and kindness in oneself and others

The Windward School is the preeminent school for the remediation of language-based learning disabilities for students in Grades 1-9.  Through a multisensory, direct instruction curriculum, Windward helps students thrive academically, while enabling them to understand their learning styles, build confidence, and develop self-advocacy skills.

Windward currently employs more than 450 faculty and staff members across four divisions and three campuses, giving employees a small, tight-knit community at their campus while feeling part of a larger organization. Two Westchester campuses are located in White Plains, NY, and the Manhattan campus is located on the Upper East Side.  Due to COVID, we have a temporary campus for our Manhattan Lower School on the Upper West Side.  

  

The Windward School also has two divisions that support its mission — The Windward Teaching Training Program and The Windward Institute.

·      The Windward Institute offers professional development to all educators, forms partnerships with research and educational institutions, and advocates for students with language-based learning disabilities.

Our Mission  

The School is an independent, coeducational day school dedicated to providing an excellent instructional program for children with language-based learning disabilities.  The multisensory curriculum is designed for students of average to superior intelligence who can benefit from the unique educational experience provided.  Through direct instruction in small class settings, a trained staff assists students to improve their language skills.  Academic success, combined with opportunities for social and emotional growth, enables students to understand their learning styles, build confidence, and develop self-advocacy skills. Windward is committed to helping students achieve their full potential in preparation for a successful return to the mainstream educational environment.  To meet these goals, the School provides ongoing training to its faculty based on the most current research and also shares its expertise with the parent body, other educators, and the broader community.
