Reel Works seeks an accomplished SCREENWRITING INSTRUCTOR for our 2017-18 Narrative Lab workshop.

The Narrative Lab is a free 10 month after school workshop open to teens and young adults who have completed Reel Works introductory filmmaking programs. This course is a series of month long modules working towards the final production of a short narrative film, to be screened in June.

Reel Works is hiring a Screenwriting Instructor that will be supported by a lead instructor, a production instructor, and a teaching assistant, and will report to the Director of Education and Artistic Director Class meets 2 times per week for 2 hours sessions.

Responsibilities include:

Curriculum & Lesson Plans - building on 15 years of experience, we invite all our teaching artists to customize the curriculum to his or her strengths and ideas to improve student experience and filmmaking outcomes. Instructors are responsible for lesson plans which must be approved by the Director of Education.

Student Recruitment - Reel Works students must apply and are interviewed and selected by the Master Lab Instructors, Education Director and Artistic Director.

Teaching - The Master Lab Instructors and Student Teacher must lead an effective, engaging two-hour workshop twice a week that challenges each participant to conceive, plan, shoot, edit and present and original short narrative film that will be screened at Time Warner in June.

Assessment & Badging - The Master Lab Instructors will use Reel Works original Media MKRS digital badging system to acknowledge student progress, encourage skill development and assess student learning and achievement.

Volunteer Recruitment & Management - Production teams are matched 2:1 with a professional filmmaker-mentor. The Master Lab Instructor supports outreach and recruitment of volunteers; mentor selection and matching; weekly communication and ongoing support of mentors throughout the workshop.

Professional Development - Reel Works requires that all our teaching artists participate in our paid training program, Teaching Artist University which provides ongoing support and resources within a community of artist-instructors dedicated continuous improvement.


The Narrative Lab Instructors must be a professional filmmakers with extensive screenwriting and/or producing and directing experience.

Experience teaching NYC teens.

Adobe Premiere Editing

Most importantly, our instructors must engage, challenge and inspire young storytellers to achieve the excellence they are capable of.

A knowledge of the principles of youth development, a high degree of self-awareness, strong personal boundaries and the ability to ask for help are all essential skills.

Part Time - 15 Hours/Week - November 2017 -June 2018

Salary: This is a part time positions that does not include health benefits. $30-35/Hour commensurate with experience in filmmaking, technical skills, teaching and youth development.
