Oliverian School is an alternative, college-preparatory boarding high school for bright adolescents who have not felt at home in traditional settings. Our supportive academic and student-life program helps students embrace their unique identity, purpose, and voice so that they can contribute to any situation and find their place the world.
Dorm Parents play a key role in the lives of the students at the Oliverian School. Dorm parents are tasked with cultivating a positive, supportive, and home-like culture in the dorm; proactively helping students develop practical life skills as well as social and community living skills; providing critical study support during study halls; leading by example and redirecting behavior when needed; and enriching students’ lives by planning and participating in a variety of on- and off-campus extracurricular activities. Dorm parents have a private apartment, including a bedroom, kitchen, living room, and bathroom, attached to a farmhouse style dorm housing between five and twelve students in single or double occupancy rooms.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong belief in the power and influence of positive adult relationships in the lives adolescents and have an intuitive sense as it relates to understanding adolescent behavior and engage in supportive relationships.
Dorm parents also have opportunities to teach some of our “pillar” classes in the areas of adventure, the arts and stewardship. There are often other opportunities in this position to coach sports or develop and plan adventure based activities or help our academic support program. Dorm parents play integral roles in assisting students academically both during structured study halls and as academic advisors.
