ABOUT THE PROGRAM:  The NCS Residence, a long-term, supportive housing facility on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, houses 65 formerly homeless men and women, the majority of whom are mentally ill and have been chronically homeless.  Staff at the NCS Residence, including social workers, case managers, and a part-time psychiatrist, provide case management and mental health counseling. In addition, we provide a full range of services including money management, vocational and educational programs, meals, and recreational activities all aimed at enhancing and supporting residents’ independent living. 

 

REPORTS TO: Program Manager, NCS Residence

 

BASIC FUNCTION:  The Recreational Specialist is responsible for creating, planning and conducting a wide variety of organized recreational and leisure activities at the Residence every week. The role will lead structured group programs designed to improve and maintain the general health and well-being of the residents. Examples of these activities are arts and crafts, games, sports, dance and movement, exercise, drama, animals, music, community outings, culinary projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Devise, plan and conduct weekly events and a monthly calendar of activities designed to encourage the fullest participation possible in concert with the NCS Residence Director and Case Managers.
  • Shop for, prepare and host meals for residents with special planning and menus for holidays and events.
  • Facilitate delivery/pickup and distribution of donations to residents including food, clothing and other items
  • Use therapeutic interventions that are consistent with the needs of the residents, utilizing the NCS Residence staff, client data, observations and interactions with the client.
  • Work cooperatively with staff at all levels to ensure quality service provision and participate fully in an interdisciplinary team approach for resident treatment.
  • Work with Director of Human Resources and Volunteer Services to identify needs for volunteers and coordinate in-kind donations.
  • Track all client and group recreational activities and attendance.
  • Submit monthly statistical information for internal and government reporting.
  • Promote all planned activities with flyers, posted schedules and calendars and conduct outreach to the residents, encouraging them to participate in the scheduled activities.
  • Administer the recreational budget, purchase supplies, and provide all receipts and materials related to expenses.
  • Monitor residents as they take their medication, when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum one year experience in organizing recreational or leisure activities required; strong preference for candidates who provided these services for our target community.
  • Experience in social services working with homeless, mentally ill, chemically addicted, and elderly populations a plus.
  • Computer Proficiency required.
