Ladder Up is an entrepreneurial, Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to providing free financial services to hardworking, low-income families and individuals. Through free tax return preparation, college financial aid application assistance, and financial education, Ladder Up helps its clients access the resources they need to move up the economic ladder. Since 1994, Ladder Up has served more than 317,000 clients and has helped them obtain $562 million in economic benefits. 


Position Description

As the Tax Assistance Program (TAP) Manager, you will coordinate delivery of Ladder Up’s free tax preparation services, including all aspects of the planning, execution, and evaluation of the program. In addition, you will lead and motivate full-time and part-time staff members. You will analyze program metrics and implement program goals annually. You will be given responsibilities that require strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, dedication, and resourcefulness.

As the TAP Manager, you will work directly with Ladder Up Director’s to drive program growth and improvement. You will also work with the local Internal Revenue Service (IRS) representative to ensure that the program complies with IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) quality measures and standards. You will need to keep up-to-date on applicable tax law and communicate tax updates to your team as well as the 800+ volunteers that participate in the program. In addition to tax law, you will learn how to use Intuit’s ProSeries tax software.

Other key facets of the position:

-      Ensuring the quality of the client experience, which includes implementing a client outreach plan, refining client service processes, and overseeing client communication procedures

-      Attending tax sessions to provide direct service to clients and assistance to volunteers and seasonal staff members

-      Working closely with the Ladder Up Volunteer Program Manager to improve and enlarge the volunteer program, which includes developing new partnerships with companies, colleges, and organizations, refining training curricula and delivery, improving volunteer communications, and increasing volunteer engagement

The TAP Manager plays a dynamic role and helps to produce a far-ranging impact in Chicago. Last year, Ladder Up prepared over 11,000 tax returns free of charge, helping clients secure more than $17.5 million in needed tax refunds. Now more than ever, today’s economic conditions have made the free services that Ladder Up provides critical for families.

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Access

·        Flexibility and willingness to work nights and weekends during the busy season

·        Access to a vehicle is as asset but is not required
