ADL (Anti-Defamation League) is a leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. ADL is the first call when acts of antisemitism occur. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.
ADL is virtually unique among national civil rights organizations in its close partnership with Law Enforcement, providing tracking and exposure of violent extremists and training on matters such as managing implicit bias.
ADL is a leading organization opposing attempts to delegitimize, demonize and impose double standards on Israel. While ADL itself has criticized policies and statements of various Israeli governments, it is committed to calling out and combating anti-Zionist or anti-Israel statements or activities that cross the line into antisemitism, regardless of their source.
The Director of Government Relations, Antisemitism and Extremism (“Director”) represents ADL and lobbies on its antisemitism and extremism agenda before Congress and the Administration. They will also represent ADL with national organizations and coalitions that combat antisemitism and extremism and will liaise, as appropriate, with national civil rights organizations and coalitions and with Jewish communal organizations. They are a government relations leader with strong political acumen, innate political instincts, and deep legislative and regulatory procedural understanding and experience who can reach and build strong relationships with a broad array of constituencies to advance ADL’s mission. The primary focus will be at the federal level, but they will be able to support and provide expertise to ADL’s Regional Offices as well.
Internally, the Director will also build close relationships with our Law Enforcement staff members. They will also serve as a bridge between the GRACE team and the Education Team, the Center on Technology and Society (CTS) and the Center on Extremism (COE). They will also partner with ADL’s International Affairs division. They will also collaborate as necessary, with ADL’s Director of Antisemitism Programs.
- Serve as ADL’s lead federal lobbyist on antisemitism and extremism.
- Build strategic relationships with congressional members and staff and agency officials who can help ADL to advance its agenda and secure achievement of ADL’s policy goals.
- Promote relationships between key officials and ADL’s CEO, VP of GRACE and other senior ADL leaders.
- Raise public awareness and initiate advocacy campaigns; craft advocacy strategy and help formulate political and policy priorities for ADL at the federal level and support advocacy at the state level; track, analyze and report on legislative and regulatory developments that impact ADL’s antisemitism and extremism agendas. Draft ADL policy statements, testimony, letters to and other lobbying of Congress, draft and submit administrative comments and engagement in other initiatives to influence rulemaking.
- Conduct ongoing analysis of developments in the federal congressional and executive branches. Provide guidance to ADL’s SVP of Policy and other staff and leadership (national staff, regional directors, area civil rights counsels, regional board members) on important developments and trends in government policy relevant to ADL’s work.
- Be a catalyst to establish new relationships between ADL leaders and key community officials.
- Generate opportunities for ADL senior leadership and experts to provide testimony to Congress and take a lead role in preparing such testimony and prepping ADL staff for appearances.
- Support ADL outreach and partnerships with different political constituencies to achieve policy objectives at the federal level. This could include non-profit groups, Jewish communal groups and faith organizations more generally, think tanks, , advocacy organizations, labor unions, and other groups to combat racism, antisemitism and other forms of intolerance.
- Serve as an engaged member of team to ensure integration of the federal policy and political agenda into other departments (g., Civil Rights, CTS, COE, Law Enforcement), as appropriate.
- Partner with International Affairs, Law Enforcement, COE, CTS and other ADL colleagues to provide intelligence and other support for ADL’s work and introduce and interpret it for the Administration and Congress.
- Direct, supervise or support policy initiatives, programmatic activities, and special projects in coordination with regional offices and other departments as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the Growth staff to develop thematic, program and speaker ideas for the annual Leadership Summit in DC and oversee advance work for lobby days and lobbying training throughout the year.
- Help with training various ADL stakeholders with respect to antisemitism and extremism legislative and regulatory landscape.
- Assist Communications and Branding & Marketing team, as necessary, with respect to antisemitic and extremism legislative and regulatory messaging.
- Exceptional networking, public speaking, writing and communications skills.
- Relevant lobbying experience in Washington DC and sophisticated understanding of policy-making processes and political dynamics.
- Strong familiarity with and ability to have command of, communicate, and analyze antisemitism and extremism developments and policy based on ADL positions.
- Strong organizational skills to track a broad range of legislative and administrative initiatives.
- Knowledge of Jewish community affairs, and US-Middle East policy, particularly with regard to Israel.
- Natural leader and advocate.
- Open-minded. Can see both sides of issues and operate in a non-partisan manner.
- Ability to work alongside Congressional Members from both parties and across the political spectrum of both sides of the aisle, to further ADL’s initiatives.
- Ability to interact with groups and Congressional members who may not agree with all of ADL’s positions on extremism and antisemitism to collaborate if and where possible, to educate, and where appropriate, to call out.

- Minimum of eight years Washington/Hill leadership experience focused on communication and advocacy that connects to ADL’s antisemitism and extremism agenda is required; 10 or more years of experience preferred; experience with relevant federal agencies or Congressional committees engaged in fighting antisemitism and confronting extremism strongly preferred.
- Existing relationships with relevant constituencies, including with key Administration and Congressional staff and committees a strong plus.
- BS/BA degree or equivalent work experience required.
- An advanced degree or equivalent experience in law, government/political science, Jewish Studies or Middle East Affairs is preferred.
- Flexibility is required to work extended hours or on weekends as may be needed.
- Ability to spend long hours upon occasion at workstation/computer.
- Occasional travel is required to attend events and conferences, both domestically and internationally
- The individual will be required to register as a lobbyist.
