The Attic Youth Center (The Attic) is the only organization in Philadelphia that exclusively serves LGBTQ youth. The Attic’s mission is to create opportunities for LGBTQ youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community, and to promote the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society. The Attic’s mission is supported by a multifaceted approach to counteract the prejudice and oppression faced by LGBTQ youth through building community, reducing isolation, promoting knowledge and life skills, providing access to resources, combating homophobia, and developing leaders. The overall aim of The Attic’s services is to prepare LGBTQ youth for long-term self-sufficiency though programming focused on life skills, mental health, and supportive services. 

Job Readiness coach provides direct Life Coaching support through one-on-one sessions to young LGBTQ people ages 14-23 focused on identifying, articulating, and planning toward achieving short- and long-term career goals.


Responsibilities:

Internship Development and Employee support

  • Reach out to potential employers to develop, locate, and secure internship opportunities for Attic youth
  • Develop relationships with employers to understand their business and the job requirements of the internship position
  • Screen and train potential employers in working with Attic interns
  • Support employers in their work with Attic interns
  • Monitor internship placements and maintain contact with employers
  • Mediate employer youth differences, if necessary
  • Develop a database of internships sites with corresponding job expectations and skills needed

Program Support

  •  Design groups and programs to support youth in seeking and maintaining employment and building employability skills
  • Provide administrative support to The Attic’s in-house internship programs through coordination with the Philadelphia Youth Network and Out of School Time programs
  • Work with the ED/Voc program specialists to design groups and programs to support job exploration, attainment, retention, and success, to prepare youth and young adults for participation in internships
  •  Work individually with youth to prepare them for participation in work placement and/or internship positions
  • Match and refer internship ready youth to employers
  •  Assist youth in preparing for internship interviews
  • Monitor, and provide ongoing support for youth in internships
  • Work with youth to improve job performance and gain necessary job skills
  • Prepare forms and reports related to internship activities
  • Track youth activity and progress data

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, or human services-related field and at least two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of adolescents in an urban setting, including knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth from various cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in positive youth development and empowerment.
  • Experience working with families, volunteers, and collaborating community agencies.
  • Experience facilitating group discussions and managing a variety of small and large group dynamics.
  • Ability to work with youth in both group and one-on-one settings.
  • Ability to plan creative and engaging groups and programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including conflict mediation and public speaking.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when appropriate and strong decision making skills.
  • Computer skills: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
