Location: Los Angeles, CA

The Bail Project seeks third-year law students and recent law school graduates to apply for a legal fellowship to begin in Fall 2021. Fellowship funding must be secured through a school or foundation.

About The Bail Project:

Our Model

The Bail Project is a national nonprofit that combats mass incarceration by paying bail for people in need, enabling them to return home to their families and communities while awaiting court dates. Once a client is released on bail, we provide them court reminders, transportation assistance, and voluntary referrals for support resuming their lives. We call this model Community Release with Support. We seek to secure freedom for an unprecedented number of people—and have already bailed out over 10,000 people—while pursuing advocacy to dismantle racially-biased, wealth-based pretrial detention. Through these efforts, we’re laying a strong foundation for systemic change to make our intervention no longer necessary. Learn more about our vision for pretrial reform at aftercashbail.org.

Our Team

We’re a community of advocates committed to ending mass incarceration and advancing racial and economic justice. Our organization is comprised of a central support team in Los Angeles, CA, and a network of client advocates or “Bail Disruptors” who work in their local communities to provide bail assistance and advance reform.

Fellowship Description:

The fellow will be a part of our Legal/Policy Department in our Los Angeles, CA office and will report directly to the Legal and Policy Director. The fellow will also work closely with other lawyers in our Legal/Policy team.

The fellow’s primary responsibilities will include conducting legal support for bail operations in sites and advancing advocacy support to end cash bail.

Legal Support for Bail Operations

  • Research state and local law, court rules, administrative regulations, practices, and licensing and insurance requirements related to bail in potential bail fund sites.
  • Travel to potential bail fund sites to observe bail practices, collaborate with local stakeholders and advocates, and advance systemic change.
  • Analyze legal and non-legal risks associated with potential bail fund sites.
  • Present oral and verbal recommendations to The Bail Project’s leadership regarding where and how the organization should support local partners and begin posting bail in new jurisdictions.
  • Advise local teams and senior leadership concerning legal and practice issues affecting site operations and bail out capacity.

Advocacy Support to End Cash Bail

  • Work closely with, and provide policy analysis and legal expertise to, teams at local sites and the central office.
  • Engage in non-litigation advocacy, including working to promote local and state legislation and ballot measures, urging key decisionmakers and stakeholders to advance system change, and providing support and assistance to local advocates, organizers, and coalitions.
  • Plan and contribute to advocacy campaigns, prepare advocacy materials, local and state advocacy letters as part of campaigns, public testimony, and public education resources.
  • Identify and support the development of potential high-impact litigation cases based on the experiences of The Bail Project’s clients.
