About the Data & Evaluation team 

We want every layer of our organization -- from our Executive Team to our teachers -- to feel empowered by data, and ready to learn and grow from it so that we can best support our students, families, and staff. To do this, we aim to make actionable insight readily available, drive regional evaluation to identify and share best practices, improve processes and role sustainability, and to inspire introspection among our teammates. 

Position Overview

We are looking for a Data Analyst to join our relentlessly curious, entrepreneurial regional Data and Evaluation team. We are looking for a data evangelist, who not only enjoys diving deep into data sets and uncovering key insights but also is excited by building data literacy and championing a data-driven culture. The ideal candidate will be an analytical, resourceful problem-solver and a skilled communicator. This is a highly collaborative position, as the Data Analyst will work cross-functionally with several teams at our Regional Support Office in Oakland (BART-accessible). S/he will report to our regional Director of Data & Evaluation. 

Essential Functions

With support from the Data and Evaluation team, the Data Manager will be responsible for:

Data Analysis and Visualization: 

  • Develop deep expertise in designing, building and maintaining our tool portfolio using Tableau and custom SQL reporting within our data warehouse
  • Use Tableau, Google Apps, Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services, MS Excel, Powerpoint, or other tools to customize and create powerful, sustainable and user-friendly tools and analyses to drive data-driven decision-making
  • Analyze school and student data, identifying trends and patterns and determining their implications for our practices in core areas such as teaching and learning, school culture, and talent
  • Create compelling narratives to encourage data-driven decision-making
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation to ensure consistency of data definitions and procedures around data collection and reporting
  • Complete ad hoc data analysis requests in a timely and efficient manner 

Build Capacity and Drive Data Literacy: 

  • Develop training resources for teachers, staff and senior leaders on how to effectively use data dashboards
  • Help schools troubleshoot academic data reporting issues in a way that builds their internal capacity, developing training resources for the most common issues
  • Partner with regional teams on data-related projects and initiatives

Data Strategy:

  • Work with schools, regional staff, and the Data Team to plan and prioritize short-term and long-term analytics needs
  • Conduct needs assessment with teachers, staff and senior leaders around topics such as academic achievement (assessments, etc.), talent pipelines (staffing and coaching), and social and emotional learning (e.g. school culture) 
  • Assess the quality of user experience for dashboards and tools and refine products as needed
  • Collaborate with the Data Team to develop and maintain a data warehouse that connects key student, academic, and operational data for meaningful analysis


Experience & skills:

  • Extensive experience analyzing large datasets, with high accuracy and attention to detail; experience with educational data a plus
  • Significant experience in database management and reporting
  • Highly resourceful, with demonstrated ability to learn new data platforms/systems quickly and independently
  • Strategic thinker, with an ability to think critically about issues and solutions
  • Goal-oriented, with strong initiative and creative problem-solving skills
  • Flexible, with a strong ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Proven track record of teamwork and proactive collaboration with others
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of three years’ work experience

Technical skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in SQL for database management and reporting
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel
  • Tableau experience preferred
