Salary. The salary is commensurate with experience. The position is full-time (FLSA: Exempt).

What you’ll do. NBWJI is hiring a research associate who is passionate about research and using empirical data to drive policy and practice. The research associate will work closely with the executive director to design and implement research and evaluation projects employing an intersectional framework to understand how race and gender impact the criminalization and punishment of Black women, girls, and gender nonconforming people. You will be involved in all aspects of the research and evaluation process (e.g., literature review, data collection, data entry and management, data analysis and report writing). 


*Note: While this is a grant-funded position for 24 months, NBWJI is seeking additional funding for the role to continue beyond that timeframe, as the position is critical to the organization’s strategic vision. 


Who we’re looking for. 

  • You are committed to (and preferably have experience) engaging in research and evaluation in partnership with directly impacted people (e.g., community-based participatory research, participatory action research).
  • You are comfortable and capable of translating complex data analysis for community stakeholders and advocates. 
  • You are well-versed in the concept of intersectionality and its utility as a framework for analyzing and challenging current policy and practice and identifying new strategies for action. 
  • You have experience conducting qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis; you have experience using data analysis software (i.e., STATA, SPSS); and you are knowledgeable about human subject concerns.


Responsibilities.

  • Assist with the development and implementation of research and evaluation projects.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, including conducting one-on-one interviews, focus groups, observation, administering questionnaires.
  • Lead research participant recruitment efforts, including developing recruitment materials and establishing relationships with stakeholders that can assist with recruitment efforts.
  • Oversee and manage data storage and security, including paper and electronic files.
  • Assist with writing Institutional Review Board proposals.
  • Assist with writing research proposals.
  • Assist with creating and administering data collection instruments.
  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Assist with writing research reports, briefs, and fact sheets.
  • Represent NBWJI at events, meetings, presentations.
  • Provide data/performance monitoring assistance and training to partners, as needed.


Qualifications. 

  • Expertise. You have a graduate degree in a relevant field, such as public health, social work, law, sociology or another social science field. And you have 5+ years conducting research and evaluation in the fields of criminal-legal reform, education justice, youth justice, child welfare, and/or other related fields, preferably in applied settings. 
  • Project Management. You have experience leading the implementation of research projects. You are detail-oriented and are committed to producing work of the highest caliber. You have the ability to multitask and understand how to prioritize and delegate work as needed. You are able to work independently and in groups. 
  • Research & Data Analysis. You are highly competent using excel and other data analysis software, such as SPSS, STATA, R, Nvivo, or other qualitative data analysis software. You are comfortable creating and using logic models and theories of change to guide research and evaluation. You have experience engaging research addressing sensitive topics and understand how to create and administer research instruments in a caring manner. 
  • Communication. You are an effective written and oral communicator. You have experience presenting to large audiences, and you are adept at communicating complex ideas and concepts in an accessible manner. And you are adept at creating compelling data visualizations. 
  • Collaboration. You value collaboration and have experience leading participatory projects that involve system-impacted people. You are open to sharing and receiving feedback. And you are interested in finding synergy between projects.
  • Travel. Some travel is required, although all travel is on hold at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
