The mission of The Father McKenna Center (the Center) is to accompany and care for families struggling with poverty and men facing homelessness by providing food, shelter, clothing, and services to support their journey toward stability, productivity, meaning, and hope. Located on the campus of Gonzaga College High School, rooted in the Ignatian Catholic tradition, and built upon the good works, ideals, and values of Father Horace McKenna, S.J., we believe all persons are made in the image and likeness of God and as such deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. About the Role

The Director of Development will be the lead fundraising strategist, tactician, and project manager for the Center’s roughly $1.6M current philanthropic revenue portfolio, which we aim to grow in the coming years. The Director of Development is responsible for developing, executing, and analyzing our annual development plan, as well as representing the Center to individual and institutional donors. This role will also take on standardizing and streamlining the organization’s fundraising processes and so must be familiar with development operations, including CRM management, gift processing, budget-building, and donor stewardship.

The Director of Development will report to and work closely with the President. Over the coming years, this role will be responsible for building up the Center’s development department in regard to strategy, systems, and talent. This role will have supervisory duties as more staff join the department.  

This role is a full-time position working from our Washington, DC office (as public health conditions allow), with some travel required.

The Director of Development can expect their work to include:

Leadership and Development Strategy:

  • Contribute positively to organizational culture and organizational values
  • Actively engage with other staff to understand the details of our work and gather stories for use in development communications        
  • Manage and execute the Center’s development and stewardship plans to achieve annual revenue goals
  • Update existing development and stewardship plans with new ideas, industry best practices, and data-driven analysis
  • Ensure a robust gift pipeline big enough to reach annual revenue goals by actively managing prospective and current donors, foundations, and other funders solicited via proposals, grant applications, multiple appeals, and other fundraising activities       
  • Participate in strategic planning for the Center to ensure development plans align with and are in service of organizational goals
  •    Provide direction and support in engaging the board of directors in fundraising

Fundraising and Donor Relations

  • Research, design, and lead the moves management plans for major individual donors
  • Manage and develop existing initiatives, appeals, and campaigns focused on targeting new donors and stewarding existing donors
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all small and mid-size donors
  • Research and develop relationships with potential foundation funders
  • Author compelling grant proposals and complete grant reporting processes in a timely and efficient manner
  •  Help develop creative and mission-focused fundraising messaging that effectively articulates the unique role and impact of the Center
  • Project manage the President’s fundraising work, advising them where and how best to spend their time and efforts on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis
  • Plan and execute Walk for McKenna, Lesson and Carols, and other special events tied to fundraising efforts

Fundraising Operations and Gift Entry

  • Design and update a regular progress-to-goal report and development dashboard for the President and Board of Directors
  • Oversee and support execution of high-quality gift entry and revenue tracking to ensure accurate and thorough documentation of all development activities
  • Ensure integrity and accuracy in all records and reports in the CRM
  • Create, update, and train other staff as needed on documented processes to standardize and streamline all development activities

About You

To be maximally successful in this role, you need to be/have:

  • Authentic commitment to the Center’s mission and values as evidenced by professional or volunteer experience in a relevant field
  • Seasoned professional with at least 6-8 years of nonprofit development experience
  • Demonstrable experience as a frontline fundraiser with particular experience in individual giving, including major gifts, recurring giving, online fundraising, and peer-to-peer fundraising
  • Experience managing and improving development operations, ranging from CRM management to budget monitoring to gift processing
  • Experience working with volunteers of all levels and liaising with contractors and consultants
  • Excellent working knowledge of development CRMs (DonorPerfect experience is a plus) and revenue management
  • Enthusiasm to propose fresh ideas without prompting by leadership, openness to feedback on those ideas, and a persistence to bring those ideas to life
  • A born project manager able to work backward from a deadline to create a plan
  • Accustomed to working on multiple projects with different deadlines simultaneously
  • A natural relationship-builder
  • A dynamic, professional and poised brand ambassador for the Center
  • A reliable and friendly communicator who reaches out and follows up   
  • A stickler for details and quality
  • A caretaker of sensitive information about donors, board members, the Center’s constituents, etc.   
  • A strong self-motivator     
  • A creative thinker willing to test out new ideas
