POSITION OVERVIEW

At Students Rising Above, we value openness, collaboration, inclusivity, commitment, and growth. We are looking for an experienced candidate to join our team as a part time (15 hours/month) Health and Wellness Counselor. Reporting to the Senior Program Manager of College Success, this is an important position that will be responsible for the training and development of students and Advisors in the area of mental health and wellness. This individual will also be available for crisis case management support for students and will work closely with the student’s assigned advisor to provide an initial assessment and recommendation of support in times of crisis. The Health and Wellness Counselor will also work closely with the Senior Program Manager of College Success to strategize sustainable best practices for handling crisis management for all students.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Crisis Management:

  • Work with the Senior Program Manager of College Success to identify students who need crisis management support
  • Provide short-term crisis support for students (1-2 sessions) based on need to assess and evaluate appropriate next steps
  • Provide guidance to Advisors once students are assessed to create a roadmap towards the appropriate resources including educational materials, community health workers, and counseling services
  • Work with Healthcare Coordinator to verify insurance and access to service providers

Wellness Curriculum:

  • Develop a wellness curriculum for students that includes education on toxic stress and strategies to regulate the stress response
  • Develop and provide training for Advisors on basic social emotional support for students and how to identify when student issues should be escalated to a mental health professional 
  • Create a quarterly wellness newsletter for students being served by the organization
  • Compile an inventory of local mental health and wellness resources for students

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

  • MFT/LCSW licensure required. MA/MS degree in Psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Sociology or related field required
  • Must have a minimum 4-5 years of experience in the field of crisis management and mental health
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience working with and understanding the basic theoretical and developmental principles of adolescents and young adult mental health
  • Ability to effectively intervene in crisis situations using de-escalation techniques
  • Understand and desire to work with a strength-based mental health approach
  • Understanding and practice of culturally sensitive components of direct service delivery through open dialogs and self-exploration with diverse groups
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings. Ability to provide support to advisors/students after hours and on the weekends 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Genuine interest in supporting underserved and/or low-income communities
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work with internal and external constituents in an effective and professional manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate directly and effectively with others
  • Must be goal oriented, well-organized and exhibit self-motivation
  • Use of good judgment and ability to treat confidential information with discretion
  • Commitment to a personal and professional exploration of power and privilege, including a willingness to self-reflect and experience discomfort in difficult and transformative conversations. Previous progress along this journey required.
