Position Summary:

Reporting to the Boston Program Director, the Student Experience Program Manager (SEPM) is responsible for managing the after-school 10th grade (E2) and 11th grade (E3) program for students who attend our six Boston Public school partners, their teachers and mentors. During these program stages, students grow their businesses or start a new one; explore college and career options; and participate in business or community internships.


The SEPM will lead after school sessions, and will consult with student business teams and individual students to develop college and career readiness skills by launching and running microenterprises. They will work intensively with business teams as they manufacture and market their products, and will concurrently cultivate relationships with local businesses and community stakeholders to develop selling opportunities as well as internships. The SEPM will plan and execute a high volume of school- and community-based events that are a critical component of the BUILD curriculum. The SEPM will work closely with the Community Engagement and Development Manager to leverage mentors and other volunteers as an effective part of the BUILD program. The SEPM will form relationships with students, volunteers, and families to ensure excellence in program and outcomes. The SEPM supervises a Program Associate. 



The SEPM will work alongside Program Managers across multiple BUILD regions and the National Program Team to share best practices, maintain consistency of outcomes, and suggest program improvements. Successful candidates will demonstrate key competencies such as group/team facilitation, project management, and problem solving through a combination of previous education and entrepreneurial work experience. Candidates should have extensive experience working in diverse backgrounds and proven success engaging urban youth.



Position Responsibilities:

 

Management & Coaching

●      Provide training, coaching and ongoing support for mentors to implement curriculum in a dynamic, engaging space and work with students effectively, both in-person and online

●      Check in regularly with mentors to coach to outcomes, strengthen curriculum implementation, differentiate approach and problem-solve student issues

●      Manage and coach Program Associate to outcomes

 

Program Implementation


●      Plan and implement recruiting and retention strategies to maintain student enrollment

●      Lead and facilitate after school sessions for 10th and 11th grade students

●      Oversee planning and execution of key program events including competitions, family gatherings, sales bazaars and field trips

●      Provide guidance, develop structures and execute systems to ensure students can run successful businesses

●      Develop and steward relationships with community and business partners who provide internships for BUILD students

●      Collect and analyze data to evaluate current program success and make future improvements

●      Manage after school E2 and E3 program budget

●      Contribute to curriculum and program development

●      Oversee after school program location at partner site(s)

Relationship-building

●      Utilize a customer service approach to cultivate and maintain relationships with schools, mentors, volunteers and other external partners

●      Develop and maintain student relationships by demonstrating caring, respect and high expectations

●      Communicate effectively with staff, teachers, students, families, mentors and other key stakeholders to foster individual student success and strong partnerships

●      Maintain relationships with individual mentors and volunteers

●      Collaborate with National Departments and Program Managers across sites to share best practices, maintain consistency of outcomes and suggest program improvements

●      Support colleagues, students, and programming across site program areas

 

Candidate Requirements:

●      Bachelor’s Degree or transferable life experience

●      Minimum three years’ of experience directly serving youth in schools (preferably with under-resourced youth and/or in underperforming schools)

●      Demonstrated ability to strongly facilitate student groups

●      Experience managing events or like projects

●      Demonstrated ability to effectively coach mentors and volunteers and supervise professional staff

●      Capacity and eagerness to foster a supportive, engaging environment for youth

●      Ability to effectively use technology to support teachers, adult mentors and students

●      Self-starter, thrives in fast-paced environment and has a sense of humor

●      Must be highly competent in the use of G-suite, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and video conferencing; experience with a CRM a plus (BUILD uses Salesforce)

●      Entrepreneurial, business or start-up experience a plus

●      Knowledge of the Boston Public School system a plus

●      Spanish fluency a plus


Successful candidates will demonstrate the following competencies through a combination of previous education/work experiences:

●      Coaching—provides direct guidance, support and feedback through observations, modeling, scaffolding, check-ins and any other strategies necessary to ensure effective program implementation by educators, mentors and staff

●      Group/Team Facilitation—utilizes a variety of planning tools and facilitation strategies to effectively deliver information to a group so that they learn and achieve goals

●      Managing and Motivating (Student, Staff and Volunteers) Performance —sets clear goals and expectations, tracks progress, provides feedback and addresses issues promptly in order to ensure high performance of self and others

●      Project Management—identifies and thinks through all necessary steps of a project, sets appropriate deadlines, moves seamlessly between prioritized tasks, identifies required participants and holds self and others accountable to outcomes and deadlines

●      Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis—reviews quantitative and/or qualitative data sets in order to recognize patterns, identifies additional information or data needed, and draws conclusions

●      Strategic Thinking—takes into account and analyzes various points of view and data to form a perspective appropriate to a particular context; includes identifying or anticipating problems and implementing solutions

 

Position Details:

●      Full Time/Exempt

●      Location: Boston (currently BUILD is operating fully virtual during the COVID-19 health emergency)

●      Typical program operation hours are Monday – Friday, approximately 10:00am – 6:00pm; Friday’s office time is flexible and can be earlier. Additional morning, evening and weekend hours are required to fulfill the duties of this position.

●      Frequent travel between local sites is required. Employees must provide their own vehicle for transportation or travel by public transportation, must have a valid license and proof of insurance required. Work-related travel beyond the normal commute will be reimbursed.

●      Occasional extended, overnight travel with students may be required during the year for college visits and other activities.
