Queens Legal Services (QLS) seeks a social worker to work primarily with our family law and immigration practice units to provide holistic support services to crime victims from Queens. The Social Worker will be part of an interdisciplinary team of attorneys, paralegals, and Masters level social workers. The social worker will provide counseling and crisis intervention to victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) and other crime victims, assess their individual needs, and develop service and safety plans to address those needs. The social worker will provide advocacy regarding housing, public benefits and other related needs. The social worker will work directly with attorneys to help prepare and support court cases. The social worker will be responsible for providing information about Crime Victims’ Assistance and assisting clients in obtaining benefits. The social worker will participate in borough-wide outreach, and conduct community education workshops and trainings related to Crime Victims’ Services.

 

Requirements & Qualifications

 

● Master of Social Work degree, New York State (NYS) license preferred

● Experience and/or training in the field of IPV required

● Experience providing short term counseling, crisis intervention and safety planning

● Experience working with immigrant communities and clients who have experienced significant   trauma

● Experience conducting psychosocial assessments and writing affidavits of support (e.g. for U-Visa, VAWA, asylum and T-Visa applicants) preferred

● Familiarity with New York City (NYC) institutions and social service systems

● Experience providing client advocacy, especially in the area of public benefits, housing, and with NYS and NYC agencies and systems including the Administration for Childrens’ Services (ACS), and with the civil and criminal legal systems

● Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali or Korean is strongly preferred

● Strong writing skills required

● A demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color to advance equality

● Experience working with diverse communities

● Experience working in an interdisciplinary team strongly preferred

Founded in 1967, QLS seeks equal access to justice for all low-income residents of Queens through a range of legal advocacy, education and community partnerships. We provide free legal counseling, representation and referrals in civil matters involving the essentials of life including housing, public and disability benefits, domestic violence prevention, consumer and homeowner protections, access to education and employment rights to eligible low-income individuals and families. We work with our clients and partners to identify and address root causes for systemic inequalities in Queens and throughout New York City. We provide immigration legal services from our Community Law Center (Center) in Jamaica and at the Queens Family Justice Center (QFJC) where we are the founding on-site community partner. We are part of a network of local programs that make up Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), the largest free civil legal services provider in the United States.
