Washington Park Field Representative

Spend the summer in Portland’s backyard helping all of its visitors feel welcome and supported as they navigate and explore Washington Park. You will be a hub for parkwide information, helping connect visitors to nature and the cultural experiences within the city’s premier park.

Rate of pay: $15.00/hour

Type: Seasonal, non-exempt

Term of position: Training May 19 – 22, May 28 – September 8

Openings:

3 seasonal positions at 33 hours/week

• Wednesday – Sunday

• Thursday – Monday

• Friday - Tuesday


2 seasonal positions at 19 hours/ week

• Monday – Wednesday

• Tuesday – Thursday


Hours:

Mandatory training on May 19 – May 22, 2020: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm

Weekends 9:30 am– 5:00 pm

Weekdays 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

About Us

EWP is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to improving access and visitor services to Washington Park in Portland, Oregon. EWP programs include a free shuttle, traffic management, off-site parking services, and visitor information services. The organization is primarily funded through Washington Park parking meter revenue in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation. The board of directors includes director-level representation from the Oregon Zoo, Portland Parks & Recreation, World Forestry Center, Hoyt Arboretum Friends, Portland Japanese Garden, TriMet, Travel Portland, and the two adjoining neighborhood associations.

THE POSITION

Drawing over three-million visitors each year, Washington Park offers towering canopies, breathtaking views and world-class attractions. Washington Park encompasses miles of trails, winding roads, and an array of transit options. Field Representatives are expected to become experts on the Park’s attractions and the transportation options within and around the Washington Park. The team will work collaboratively with Washington Park Rangers and venue staff to ensure visitor needs are met and problems solved. This position staffs information booths and assists in traffic control operations including off-site parking as needed. This position is expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Job Responsibilities include:

Visitor Service and Information

• Set up and take down information booth signs and displays at start and end of shift

• Provide excellent service to Park visitors including information on parking meters, transportation options, and Park venues

• Educate visitors regarding Park transportation services, including the Washington Park Free Shuttle, TriMet bus/MAX routes and schedules, bicycle and pedestrian networks, and personal and oversized vehicle parking options

• Provide transportation solutions to visitors traveling into, within, and out of the Park

• Provide support to visitors during events and peak periods; assist visitors with parking meters

• Maintain daily service logs to track visitor conversations and concerns


Information Referral

• Refer Park rule enforcement and security concerns to Park Rangers; refer maintenance issues to appropriate contact

• Direct venue specific questions to the appropriate venue liaison

• Use provided radios and other devices and materials to locate information about Park attractions, rates, directions, etc.


Traffic Operations/Flagging

• Complete -offsite parking operations as directed

• Set up and take down traffic control devices/cones/signs at start and end of shift, when assigned

• Flag traffic in high congestion areas; request assistance from Park Rangers or Parking Enforcement via radio when necessary for congestion

• Ensure Park visitors respect the rules to the overflow parking spaces

• Assist with line management, next bus arrival information, loading and unloading off-site buses and Washington Park Free Shuttles

Qualifications:

• Positive and outgoing attitude while proactively ensuring visitor satisfaction

• Desire to assist Park guests and answer questions, including repetitive questions

• Ability and willingness to engage with diverse individuals and groups

• Ability to work outside in a variety of conditions for up to 8 hours a day

• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for Washington Park and the Portland region

• Strong verbal communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions

• Self-motivator with the ability to work independently

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think on your feet

• Ability to positively represent the cultural institutions in Washington Park

• Ability to speak conversational Spanish or other languages desired
