We are looking for an engaged Data Engineer who brings solid expertise and a passion for FSC’s mission, to work with us in a multinational environment.

 

The Scope:

The Data Engineer will make data accessible to internal and external FSC stakeholders in a way that encourages and embeds data use in all - big and small, everyday - actions and decisions.

 

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

·        To maintain, enhance and manage the quality and usage of data in FSC by:

o  Establishing processes for ETL for data from various structured and unstructured data sources into a data store that is suitable for business analytics and decision making.

o  Designing stable, reliable, and effective databases.

o  Optimizing and maintaining legacy systems (such as Salesforce, MySQL).

o  Modifying and testing databases according to needs and requests.

o  Solving database usage issues and malfunctions.

o  Liaising with developers to improve applications and establish best practices.

o  Gathering user requirements and identifying new features and enhancements.

o  Supporting development of technical documentation and end-user training resources.

o  Research, recommend and implement new database products, services and protocols to meet data and information needs for various FSC user groups/stakeholders.

·        To establish, manage and document processes and structures ensuring high quality of data, data standardization, and consistency across various platforms and reports, including but not limited to:

o  Review of FSC information and data sources with a view to understand, re-design, re-model and re-deploy the database structure where necessary to adapt best practices in data management.

o  Data standardization across FSC business units.

o  Practical and user-friendly workflows and protocols that facilitate information capture, design, collection, quality, storage, and reporting on data consistently across FSC departments.

o  Compliance of data assets and data processing with relevant legislation.

o  Coordination and facilitation of the rigorous clean-up and information integrity processes while delivering data products.

o  Development, modernization and improvement of Information Schemas and their maintenance.

o  Compatibility of FSC Information Models with the ISEAL Core Metadata Standard.

 

·        To manage projects related to data gathering, standardization, and management, including but not limited to:

o  Online reporting for FSC evaluations (forest management and chain of custody).

o  Enhance the certificate management processes.

o  To ensure the data stores perform with high efficiency, reliability, and the single source of truth.

·        To establish, implement and manage consistent processes for data sharing with internal and external stakeholders, in cooperation with Legal Department.

·        Additional Tasks as assigned by the formal supervisor.

 

Qualification, Experience and Skills:

·      Education and Training:

o  University degree in a relevant field, for example, computer science or data science.

·      Working Experience, Style and Skills:

o  4-5 years’ relevant experience in data modelling, big data platforms, creating data pipelines, data integration in databases, data warehouses and data lakes.

o  Proven work experience as a Database developer.

o  In-depth understanding of data management concepts and practices (e.g. metadata, permissions, recovery, security, privacy, quality, and monitoring) and data integration (ETL/ELT) procedures.

o  Working knowledge of software development and user interface web applications.

o  Experience in manipulating data sets and building analytical models to derive high quality business intelligence insights.

o  Proven record of successfully managed data projects and modernization of organizational data assets and infrastructure.

o  Strong problem-solving skills and a strong focus on end-user experience.

o  Knowledge of components and aspects of GDPR and their impact on information and data management in applicable software and platforms.

o  Excellent estimation and management of delivery timelines.

o  Ability to perform well while handling competing priorities and several functions.

o  Solution oriented attitude to work.

o  A strong sense of diligence and service.

o  Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

·      Languages:

o  Fluency in English (spoken and written).

o  Spanish is a plus.

·      Computing Skills: Good knowledge of and hands-on expertise with:

o  Data and web service integration.

o  Spark, Hadoop, Postgres, Cassandra, or similar platforms.

o  Computer programming languages (preferably Python, SQL, etc.) and manipulating large data sets.

o  On-premise and cloud-based solutions (preferably Azure and AWS).

o  PowerBI, Tableau or other advanced information and data analytics tools.

o  Microsoft Office 365 products.

·      Communication Skills:

o  Proven excellent presentation skills.

o  Proven excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, fostering deep stakeholder engagement.

o  Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills.

o  Ability to establish and maintain positive interpersonal relations.

o  Ability to communicate complex technical tech concepts to business users.

·      Additional valuable skills:

o  Knowledge of certification systems such as in forestry and environmental sciences.

o  Statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications.

o  Working knowledge of the ISEAL Core Metadata Set / Standard.

o  Open Knowledge and Interoperability repositories, e.g., Dspace, Fedora.

o  MS Dynamics.
