About the Role

In this role, you will own and direct the overall technology platform for the Foundation’s growing portfolio of new products aimed at scaling our mission of inspiring, connecting, and empowering people to change their world. 

As a founding member of our growing product and technology organization, you will help define and drive the future of the Foundation’s product and technology strategy, shape critical technical decisions, and build inspiring and forward-looking software applications, which will have lasting impact on the audiences we serve.  

As Engineering Manager, you will work closely with your product management and design counterparts to craft foundational product development processes, kickstart execution on our product roadmap, and rapidly hire and train the Foundation’s first sets of dedicated engineering teams. The Engineering Manager will report to the Director of Product and Technology Development.

Outcomes

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for achieving the following outcomes:

  • Manage and rapidly scale the Foundation’s engineering team with a focus on quality, consistency, velocity, and experimentation;
  • Institute a top-tier agile software development process that can adapt to the current and evolving needs of the organization;
  • Define our team’s technology and software development standards and create/refine our overall systems architecture and data strategy, ensuring our core systems and data are fully integrated, preventing silos;
  • Advance the tech and product team’s OKRs by executing on a number of high-priority new product areas -- ranging from products for general audiences to tools for niche groups of global changemakers;
  • Partner closely with the Obama Presidential Center team to ensure our chosen technical infrastructure accommodates future operational and place-based user experience needs;
  • Help architect decision frameworks that allow us to determine key build vs partner decisions in the near- and medium-term.

Responsibilities

The ultimate aim of the Engineering Manager is to achieve the outcomes listed above. In order to achieve those outcomes, we imagine that the Engineering Manager will spend their time in the following ways:

  • Oversee the architecture of all of our technical systems, including the maintenance of all architectural components and standards;
  • Grow an excellent engineering team comprised of highly motivated engineers and technical leaders through hands-on recruiting, training, and mentoring;
  • Work in partnership with your core partners in product and design, as well as stakeholders across the organization to execute on the Foundation’s key roadmap priorities;
  • Make pragmatic decisions by continually balancing the effort required to achieve engineering excellence with organizational priorities and product needs;
  • Provide thought-partnership to the product and design teams as the Foundation merges both physical and digital experiences;
  • Nourish a collaborative environment by encouraging the sharing of ideas and openness to feedback, learning, and iteration.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in software development, with a demonstrated track record of shipping successful and scalable products;
  • 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams, with a proven track of building top-talent and high-performance teams;
  • Ability to write production-ready code, if need be;
  • Expertise in front-end and back-end architecture and development;
  • Experience building mobile applications;
  • Experience with data analytics platforms;
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and continuous integration and delivery;
  • Familiarity with Salesforce a plus;
  • Understanding of cloud-based environments, and familiarity with designing and deploying applications at scale;
  • Ability to create innovative technical and business solutions where none exist or need revision;
  • Past demonstrated leadership on multiple products throughout their life cycles -- from idea conception to product release and maintenance;
  • Demonstrated experience with project planning and mapping out of major milestones and tactical to-dos required to achieve a goal;
  • High degree of comfort working in a scrappy, fast-paced, mission-oriented environment;
  • Ability to manage and work with individuals across geographic locations and with a variety of backgrounds;
  • Deep and recognizable commitment to user empathy;
  • Passion for building inclusive and accessible product experiences.
