Organization Description

South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) is a 501(c)3 organization for New York City youth ranging in age from kindergarteners to college students. SAYA is South Asian-focused, inclusive and committed to connecting young people from all backgrounds to opportunities. Our mission is to foster a strong sense of belonging in youth and provide them with tools to thrive academically, professionally and personally. Many of our participants are recent immigrants and face challenges that can hinder their chances to be academically successful, graduate high school and go to college. SAYA provides an accessible, safe and culturally affirming space for all youth and offers mentorship beyond the classroom so they confidently grow into engaged community members ready for college, career and personal success. Established in 1996, SAYA has grown into a $3.8 million organization currently running programs at nine NYC schools and our community center in Elmhurst, Queens.

Position Summary

The Chief Development Officer will be a member of SAYA’s leadership team and a key organizational culture carrier. Working closely as a thought partner to the Executive Director, the Chief Development Officer will develop and manage a strategic fund development plan to support SAYA. Using research and relationship building, they will expand SAYA's corporate, foundation and individual donor giving base through grant proposals, major gifts, fundraising campaigns, special events and planned giving. They will maintain and look for opportunities to increase City and State government contracts. They will also create and execute an effective marketing and branding strategy by expanding the organization's online presence, securing media coverage and producing effective promotional materials. They will manage the department’s short- and long-term initiatives and projects as well as provide supervision and mentorship to Development and Communications staff. They will work in close partnership with the finance and program teams, often being responsible for moving projects forward. A successful candidate is skilled and strategic in maintaining relationships with all of the organization’s stakeholders and a talented writer. They are an effective project manager with keen attention to detail. They are an analytical and creative thinker able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

Leadership 

  • Help shape and articulate SAYA’s mid- and long-term vision in collaboration with the Executive Director and other internal stakeholders.
  • Create a short-, mid- and long-term strategic fund development plan that supports SAYA’s mission and goals.
  • Maintain an open dialogue with board members on SAYA’s fundraising and communications plans through periodic email and phone communication, as well as providing updates and soliciting feedback at board meetings.
  • Confidently represent the organization in front of a variety of stakeholders.
  • Contribute to organization-wide policy decisions as a member of SAYA’s leadership team.

Foundations, Government and Corporations: Strategically Increase Institutional Revenue 

  • Support the Grants and Communications Manager in producing ongoing research on prospective foundation, government and corporate funding opportunities and partnerships.
  • Develop relationships with current and prospective institutional funders.
  • Manage key partnerships with foundation officers and corporate supporters.
  • Collaboratively work with our Grants and Communications Manager to ensure the quality and timeliness of SAYA’s proposal submissions. 

Individual Donors: Lead Individual Donor Cultivation and Contribution Strategy

  • Conduct research on current and prospective individual donors and develop a strategic individual fundraising plan in conjunction with the Executive Director. 
  • Plan and coordinate meetings with current and prospective funders.
  • Produce constituent giving reports that illustrate trends and highlight opportunities.
  • Supervise the timely provision of acknowledgement and thank you notes to donors.

Event Planning: Oversee Logistical Coordination and Follow-Up

  • Support Board members with the planning and execution of the annual gala.
  • Maintain relationships with donors, vendors and external collaborators.
  • Support fundraising and outreach events organized by our Board, Junior Board, volunteers and partner organizations.
  • Solicit in-kind donations for events.
  • Ensure proper follow-through and collection of funds raised at special events.  

Marketing and Communications: Increase Organization’s Visibility

  • Ensure that print and electronic materials for potential and current donors are true to SAYA’s brand.
  • Support organization’s communications strategy to increase visibility, donor base, volunteers, in-kind support and other asset building opportunities.
  • Develop relationships and maintain communications with media and offices of public officials.
  • Drive strategy for website, social media, blog, e-newsletter and other marketing materials.

Volunteers: Expand Volunteer Opportunities and Increase Engagement of Young Professionals

  • Develop volunteer opportunities in collaboration with the Executive Director and program team.
  • Lead efforts to increase the engagement of young professionals with SAYA.
  • Identify trends in volunteer involvement and take steps to further engage past and current volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years’ experience working in fundraising in roles with increasing responsibility.
  • Effective public speaker with experience serving as organizational spokesperson 
  • Persuasive content writer with success securing funding through written gift proposals
  • Adept at relationship building between key stakeholders and strategic partners.
  • Familiar with fundraising databases, such as Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge.

Compensation

$95,000+ commensurate with experience

PTO starting at 25 days

Additional Information

  • Due to COVID-19, this position is primarily remote until September 2021 when it is expected to transition to be primarily in-person.
  • While we value work/life balance, due to the nature of this position, this role will sometimes require work on evenings and weekends.
