The Rebuilding Exchange/Evanston Rebuilding Warehouse invests in our communities by reusing building materials, reducing construction waste, and training, supporting, and connecting people seeking careers in the building trades. We divert building materials from landfills through two reuse retail stores in Evanston and Chicago and offer deconstruction services to homeowners that want to save their building materials from landfills. We teach community members to repair and repurpose building materials through education workshop programs. Finally, we run paid workforce training programs that provide industry credentials, job readiness and on the job training in deconstruction and materials reuse.  Our training programs are  run simultaneously at our Evanston and Chicago locations.

The ERW seeks a Career Development Manager to support our participants in the job readiness, job placement and job retention components of our program. The Manager will also coordinate and grow our employer partnership network.  The Manager will have experience working in low-income communities and a commitment to breaking down barriers that limit access to careers in the building trades. The Manager must be able to build genuine and strong relationships with a broad base of constituents, from the program participants to employers with available jobs.

This is a full-time salaried position for 40 hours a week. Hours are flexible but generally completed Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm.  The Career Development Manager reports to the Director of Workforce Training and Deconstruction Services. 


Primary Responsibilities:

Supports and coordinates career and apprenticeship readiness for program participants

  • Meets with participants to assess needs and develop individual employment plans for career development
  • Assists in the development and/or secure professional documentation such as resumes, transcripts, etc.
  • Supports participants in job/ apprenticeship applications, interviews, and follow up.
  • Provides group instruction on professional readiness skills using the LA RISE standards.

Strengthens job and apprenticeship placement partnerships between trainees and local employers

  • Builds relationships with local employers and apprenticeship programs
  • Partners with local employers to schedule mentoring and shadowing opportunities for participants, as well as site exposure opportunities for training cohorts.
  • Participates in regular meetings on local apprenticeship opportunities and actively participates in local union and Illinois Works communities.
  • Communicates job fairs, hiring events, and training opportunities for job seekers

Strengthens job retention and success between graduates and local employers

  • Provides ongoing support to program graduates to ensure a high level of job retention and ongoing career development
  • Supports our employers in developing successful relationships with our graduates, and overcoming challenges to retention.

Assists the Workforce Training Director in program development, administration, and evaluation

  • Helps strengthen program policies and procedures to ensure that participants successfully complete the program and access careers in the building trades
  • Tracks evaluation outcomes and participants for program and grant reporting
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of relevant or related experience working in the building trades
  • Lived or professional experience working with low-income communities, preferably in the workforce development or education fields
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization and community
  • Detail oriented, organized and responsive
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
