In order to make this vision a reality, Student U’s mission is to empower students in the Durham Public Schools to own their education by developing the academic skills and personal well-being necessary to succeed in college and beyond. Student U aims to combat systemic racism and structural inequities by walking with students from the 6th grade through college graduation as they beat the statistics and become leaders in our community. The three components of Student U programming - an intergenerational college access-success pipeline, leadership development for students, families and staff, and an open source model of sharing our lessons learned is our contribution to creating a Durham where all children can succeed. Our ambitious goal is for 100% of our students to graduate high school, enroll in post-secondary institutions and matriculate from those within 6 years. We believe that this is possible for all students in our community.


The Program and Logistics Assistant position is an indispensable position for optimal operations of our entire program team. Reporting to the Operations and Facilities Manager, this position will manage all mass communications with students and families, logistics of program events, our student database, provide the operational support for the recruitment of our students on an annual basis, and organize and maintain our master program calendar.


Program and Logistical Support

In collaboration with the Operations and Program teams, the Program and Logistics Assistant will:

  • Create and manage master program calendar including events for middle, high, college and parent programming
  • Provide the necessary logistical and clerical support in planning and executing program-wide events (reserving space, ordering food, set-up/clean-up space, etc)
  • Assist in student and staff recruitment efforts (distributing applications, outreach to community partners, researching contacts, etc)
  • Facilitate travel arrangements for local and out-of-state field trips for students (booking travel, food, tours, etc)
  • Maintain updated student and family information in Apricot and Blackboard connect
  • Maintain inventory of program and office supplies and order as needed
  • Assist research and assessment coordinator with data entry as requested
  • Manage a team of high school interns during the summer (receptionist, program assistant)

Communication

  • Create and manage the yearly communication timeline for all events to ensure student and parent communication is consistent across programs
  • Prepare and send mass parent communication (email, text message and mailings) based on established system through BlackBoard connect
  • Manage program announcements for the weekly email communication (The Digest)
  • Manage Blackboard Connect mass communication system (maintain updated phone numbers and email addresses, create and maintain cohorts for various groups of communication)


Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate will become an indispensable member of our time within 3 months. Candidates will thrive and find success in detail orientated work, behind the scenes operational support and will be able to maintain strong systems of operations to provide the team structure while being appropriately flexible when necessary. This person will be believe all children can succeed when adequately supported, and be able to fully immerse into a community-driven organization. At the minimum, candidates must have relevant work experience.

The majority of Student U’s programming supports students during out-of-school time. This position will require some evenings and weekend work and a different schedule during the summer, when all Student U programs are in full swing

Position Requirements

  • Conversational Spanish is required
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently, with others and across different teams
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization with the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Ability to work well and with high efficacy under pressure
  • Team player who is flexible with regards to responsibilities and support to offer the team
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to learn and manage multiple data systems (Apricot, BlackBoard Connect)
  • Personal commitment to Student U’s Mission, Vision and Core Values
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (both verbal and written)
  • Strong problem-solving skills

Benefits

Benefits and Hourly Rate: The hourly rate is $17 and in addition, a benefits package includes: Wellness Stipend, PTO (5 vacation days and 2 floating holidays) and access to purchase membership to Student U’s health insurance plan.
