Mycelium Youth Network (MYN) prepares youth in the Bay Area for a climate challenged future. We merge ancestral traditions that emphasize youth environmental stewardship and relationship building alongside rigorous STEAM curriculum that focuses on practical hands-on skills for climate resilience and mitigation that youth create and implement in their homes and local communities. We empower youth to grow as visionary leaders and budding environmentalists, connect with ancestral teachings, and trust in the wisdom of the natural world.

About the position

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Social Media & Communication Coordinator will provide communication support to ensure efficient operation of the organization. The position will support our programming and organization through a variety of tasks related to social media and communication, including creating written and visual content for our social media channels (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook).

Our ideal candidate:

Our ideal candidate has a passion for social justice and racial equity, and experience working within nonprofit organizations. They are an effective communicator, fluent in the language of social media, highly organized, and have experience producing high quality work, sometimes with quick turnaround. They are able to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish tasks and projects, and are creative in their problem solving. 

Principal responsibilities include:

Executive & Organizational Support 

• Support the Executive Director and the Education team with tasks including: 
• Weekly staff meetings to plan out strategies for increased community engagement; 
• Support the team with occasional social media and communication workshops for youth; 
• Help plan and strategize with the Mycelium team on overall content. 

Social Media: 

• Manage Mycelium Youth Network’s platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others by posting three to four times a week with unique and engaging content utilizing accessibility features (such as ALT image descriptions); 
• Manage, plan, and execute livestream programming of our content for our in-person content;  
• Monitor comments across all Mycelium’s platforms and respond in a timely manner.
• Support youth in their contributions to our blogs and social media platforms; 
• Supporting in crowdfunding ventures for our larger organizational goals; and 
• Create a short-, medium-, and long-term plan for greater social media engagement. 

Communications: 

• Support in running our website and providing new content to our page; 
• Run a twice monthly blog for our constituents; 
• Creation of unique and engaging graphics to add to our posts; 
• Increase visibility to our website; and 
• Support in the maintenance of our website alongside our Executive Director. 

Qualifications

• Excellent written and visual communication skills and experience using those skills to run content on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube TikTok and others as they become relevant; 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, and video conferencing;  
• Familiarity with Mailchimp or another similar platform for newsletters; 
• Familiarity with Canva or another graphics design website; 
• Fluency in social media performance metrics and how to run effective advertisement campaigns;
• Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Office, specifically with Word and Excel and a willingness and ability to quickly master additional software as the organization grows; 
• Ability to work with a start-up organization in order to support the creation of structure; and
• Demonstrated commitment to environmental social justice, anti-oppression work, youth leadership, LGBTQ+ rights, and Disability Justice.
