ABOUT SAMARITANS

For over 45 years, Samaritans, Inc. has been devoted to reducing the incidence of suicide by alleviating despair, isolation, and suicidal feelings among individuals in their community through a process known as befriending. Volunteers provide compassionate and non-judgmental support free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Samaritans is known for its innovative approach to serving the community and provides a full range of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention services. An extended community education and outreach program increases the public knowledge on this issue. Phone, text, and chat-based crisis services are provided to support those in distress. Support groups and personal visits assist people and families impacted by suicide loss in their grieving and healing process.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Deputy Director of Development plays a key internal leadership role in Samaritans development efforts by leading the annual development program and managing key elements of the Samaritans’ fundraising plan, including implementation of the special events strategy (5K Run/Walk for Suicide Prevention, Breakfast for Hope, Boston and NYC marathon teams); direct mail program and electronic giving efforts, as well as monthly giving; donor and constituent communication, and development operations. The ability to connect with the mission, vision and values of Samaritans is vital; familiarity with the issue of suicide prevention is a plus.

Currently all Samaritans employees are working remotely. Applicants should be aware that this position will be temporarily remote. It is hoped/anticipated that the Samaritans office, located in Downtown Boston will reopen in 2021 at which time employees will return, with some flexibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Create and lead the implementation of the annual development plan for the organization.

·        Manage strategy and planning for Samaritans’ special events, including 5K Run/Walk for Suicide Prevention, Breakfast for Hope, and Boston and NYC marathon teams. Ensure successful implementation of logistics and planning for events working with an outside event planning vendor and internal Special Events Coordinator.


·        Ensure focus on revenue generation and donor engagement/cultivation through event strategies including corporate and individual sponsorship, communication, team captain, table captain and participant training and support to enable increased fundraising success.

·        Manage individual giving program through direct mail, electronic solicitations, monthly giving program: develop theme, messages, strategy, write copy, manage vendors, develop revenue and expense projections, analyze efforts and make recommendations for future mailings based on results.

·        Oversee internal operations, ensuring that the department functions smoothly and supports each member’s best efforts in raising revenue and cultivating and stewarding Samaritans donors and stakeholders.

·        Oversee Salesforce CRM management to support development and program functions, coordination with other departments, email marketing via Pardot, gift entry and acknowledgement process, and ensure data integrity and smooth reporting and analysis.

·        Create development-related collateral and communications working closely with Director of Marketing and Communications.

·        Responsible for electronic giving vehicles, web forms, and communications, working with Salesforce CRM Manager and Special Events Coordinator

·        Oversee recruitment and supervision of interns and volunteers to assist with development success.

·        Support other development activities as requested by Chief Development Officer.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

·        Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to make effective and persuasive verbal and written presentations to volunteers, staff, industry peers, board members, donors, and others. 

·        Ability to communicate and interact effectively with others at all levels within and outside the organization. 

·        Resolving conflicts and internal issues appropriately, sharing and receiving feedback in productive ways. 

SPECIAL REQUIRMENT/ PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORKING CONDITIONS

·        Some travel may be required for events and trainings. 

·        Flexibility in meeting demands and remaining positive during interactions is essential.

·        Flexibility in working hours appropriate for donor events is required.

·        Successfully completes the staff befriending training.

·        Operates successfully independently but functions well as a member of a team. 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

·        BA or BS preferred.

·        Minimum 7 - 9 years of broad development experience. Preference for work in small or medium size shops.

·        Strong volunteer and staff management skills.

·        Experience with fundraising events, donor solicitation and cultivation strategies, direct mail and social media required.

·        Planning and project management skills necessary to complete work on time and manage competing priorities. 

·        Must possess strong organization skills and be detailed oriented.

·        Expertise with Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), fundraising software such as Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce, and peer-to-peer fundraising platform such as Classy or TeamRaiser required.

·        Electronic and print design experience helpful.

·        Experience with WordPress, Pardot, or Constant Contact desired.

·        Ability to work with sensitive and confidential material.
