Job Summary:

A critical member of the Development & Communications team, the Director of Development, Orange County reports to the Vice President of Development and Communications and is responsible for cultivating, stewarding, and expanding relationships with a multi-faceted portfolio of supporters to launch and sustain Chrysalis’ new Orange County center. The Director works with the VP and CEO to raise at least $400,000 annually from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The top candidate should be entrepreneurial and independent, extremely personable, have excellent public speaking skills, and be comfortable talking to both large groups and individuals. S/he will be responsible for front line fundraising with donors at various levels, managing her/his own portfolio of prospects.

Duties and Responsibilities to include but not limited to:

  • Meet annual fundraising revenue budget (at least $400,000 annually) for Orange County via corporate, foundation, and individual giving, with a particular emphasis on individual major gifts
  • Cultivate and steward relationships to build visibility, impact, and financial resources for the organization
  • Manage a specific portfolio of donors and prospects at various levels of giving capacity and support the VP, CEO, and Board in the management of their Orange County portfolios
  • Meet with at least 10-15 donors per month
  • Develop a shared strategy, along with the VP and CEO, to guide all Orange County individual and corporate giving programs; develop short- and long-term strategic goals, including timelines and budget; assess areas for growth and provide leadership in the launching of new initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with the Los Angeles-based Director of Institutional Giving on the implementation and support of an Orange County foundation giving program
  • Play a strategic role in developing systems for donor identification, solicitation, tracking, and upgrading, including the planning of tailored giving opportunities, donor events, and activities throughout the year
  • Support Orange County Advisory Board Members on donor identification and stewardship efforts
  • Work with Orange County Volunteer & Program Coordinator on strategies to develop and implement corporate social responsibility engagement opportunities
  • Write compelling donor communication collateral; utilize existing mail and email pieces in focused, strategic ways
  • Collaborate with the Los Angeles-based Director of Donor Engagement and Communications and our pro-bono PR firm, supporting Orange County-based media relations/requests
  • Use Raiser’s Edge/RENXT to track all data
  • Review all Orange County giving data, create monthly status reports, and identify trends and successes related to new initiatives 
  • Support donor recognition and retention efforts; conduct donor thank-you calls
  • Provide general support to the Development & Communications department as needed
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Commitment to the organizational mission and sensitivity to the needs of low-income and disenfranchised populations
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized strategic thinker; able to set and meet goals and deadlines
  • Motivated, independent self-starter with the ability to multi-task
  • 4+ years working in a key function within a fundraising department, including demonstrated successful hands-on experience with major gift cultivation and solicitation
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent experience required
  • A proven ability to establish, maintain, and deepen relationships that contribute to the increasing visibility, impact, and financial resources of an organization over time
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge/RE NXT, strongly preferred
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining confidentiality and good working relationships
  • Valid California Driver’s license and reliable transportation
