Description

EVkids empowers youth from Boston’s inner city with the skills and confidence needed to realize their potential. We create a community of support with 1-on-1 multi-year academic mentoring matches with college volunteers, professional family engagement and school advocacy, and a life-changing summer camp experience at our 9-acre site in Vermont. By establishing a safe space where success is expected and attainable together, EVkids helps students aspire to and achieve college acceptance and enrollment as first-generation college attendees.

EVkids are low-income students, grades 4 to 12, matched 1-on-1 in multi-year tutoring and mentoring relationships with EVcorps student volunteer tutors from Harvard, Boston College, Tufts, Lesley, UMassBoston, Boston University, Northeastern, and Emmanuel College. Tutoring pairs meet weekly at two EVkids after-school Tutoring sites in Dorchester and are supported through community and campus-based events, weekly contact with families, ongoing communication with teachers and guidance counselors, and on- and off-site support to tutors. We currently support 80 tutor-tutee matches with plans in SY18-19 to expand to a third Boston site. We also host 36 campers each summer at EVkids Camp in Vermont. While 100% of EVkids seniors successfully matriculate at college, most still struggle to graduate with a college degree. The EVkids College Success Project led by the inaugural College Success Advisor is designed to address this challenge head-on.

Rooted in the Catholic tradition of social justice, EVkids is a faith-based organization that respects the various backgrounds and experiences that have brought our staff and volunteers together to work towards a more equitable and compassionate world. We are committed to a diverse workplace and do not discriminate based on race, age, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability. See www.evkids.org.
