SUMMARY

The California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) is an independent agency working under the auspices of Heluna Health, a 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor. CYAN currently employs eight staff. Funding is primarily through competitive grants from sources such as the California Department of Public Health – Tobacco Control Program and Orange County Department of Education (OCDE). Since 1997, CYAN has been providing tobacco control services in California and throughout the country. What began as a youth advocacy program has grown into a multi-dimensional organization with focused programs in higher education, the military, and youth. CYAN currently provides technical assistance, training, campaign support and networking opportunities to local health agencies, community-based organizations, colleges/universities, and individuals working toward a smoke/tobacco-free California. 

The CYAN Youth Engagement Coordinator is responsible for working closely with the Project Director and Managing Director to implement all aspects of the agency workplan, funded by OCDE, that focuses on youth advocacy, community engagement, and tobacco prevention. The Youth Engagement Coordinator’s main responsibility will be to research, create and present tobacco prevention information to K-12 staff and administrators; Tobacco Use Prevention and Education (TUPE) programs; and middle and high school students. Additionally, the Coordinator will provide technical assistance to TUPE programs to strengthen youth involvement in tobacco-free policy advocacy activities. 

The Youth Engagement Coordinator is supervised by the CYAN Project Director and/or Managing Director.

This is a full time benefitted grant-funded position (40 hours per week). 

The pay rate is $23.00 - $25.00 per hour (depending on experience).

Employment is provided by Heluna Health.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Advocacy (20%)

  • Communicate with regional TUPE programs to provide updates on youth tobacco use in California and nationally;
  • Provide updates on the OCDE project website on emerging tobacco trends, tobacco-related policies, and opportunities for youth to be involved in community-based advocacy efforts; 
  • In partnership with regional TUPE leads, create videos highlighting regional advocacy projects.

Material Development (30%)

  • Develop educational materials to support youth information and education meetings with local and state decision makers;
  • Create resources and fact sheets on emerging tobacco products, youth tobacco use, and other relevant tobacco control information for K-12 staff and TUPE programs;
  • Develop educational materials and tools for youth on tobacco control initiatives.

Training and Technical Assistance (40%)

  • Develop training content for Canvas courses for youth on tobacco prevention strategies, including smoke/tobacco-free policy advocacy;
  • Create training content for TUPE coordinators participating in collaborating with California Tobacco Control Program-funded agencies;
  • Develop and present training content at local, regional, and statewide TUPE events for youth and adult partners.

Other (10%)

  • Assist with evaluation activities as needed;
  • Complete brief monthly and in-depth quarterly progress reports;
  • Supporting and coordinating with other CYAN programs as necessary; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS 

Education/Experience

  •  Bachelors or Master’s degree in a related field (e.g. MPH, MPA, MPP) preferred
  •  Knowledge of youth engagement principles and advocacy strategies
  •  Extensive training experience, specifically with researching, developing and presenting information to adult and youth audiences
  •  Experience implementing a public health program and/or facilitating community organizing activities
  • Basic understanding of public health principles and tobacco control programs in California

Certificates/Licenses/Clearances

A valid driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation or the ability to utilize an alternative method of  transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in all MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
  • Ability to maintain content on a website, and knowledge of social marketing and social networking applications
  • Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a small staff in a positive environment
