CIS of NYC provides a wide range of services for their community, including the largest food pantry in the Lower East Side, legal and social services, ESOL classes and advocates for the DREAM Act, DACA, and Comprehensive Immigration Reform with its Justice for Immigrants group. 

The Agency is seeking a full-time staff attorney (35 to 40 Hrs. Weekly) to focus on family-based immigration and community education. Our Immigration Program currently consists of two immigration Department of Justice (DOJ) Accredited Representatives, one Master in Social Work Intern and volunteer support. We are recognized and accredited by the DOJ to provide professional immigration legal services, and we are a member of the American Immigration Lawyer's Association (AILA) and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC). The position will require occasional weekend work and night hours, but the agency is flexible on what days and hours are included in the weekly schedule. 


Responsibilities 

Under direction of the agency Director / DOJ Accredited Representative, the Immigration Staff Attorney provides counsel and representation to low income immigrants and their families before the Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), the Executive Officer for Immigration Review (EOIR), and the Department of State (DOS) regarding a wide-range of immigration matters; and assists in coordinating and supervising the activities of interns and volunteers. 


Job Duties 

● Assisting with the intake process and conducting in-person interviews and consultations for prospective clients;  

● Managing high-volume caseload concerning various immigration matters family-based petitions and visas, non-immigrant visa processing, TPS, adjustment of status, naturalization, naturalization, hardship waivers, U Visas, and other motions and legal memoranda as needed; 

● Providing representation in CIS interviews before the New York Field District Office; 

● Providing representation in removal proceedings at the New York Immigration Courts (26 Federal Plaza, 290 Broadway, or Varick Street); 

● Performing legal research on AILA publications, the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), Title 8 of Code of Federal Regulations (8 CFR), and other related primary and secondary sources of immigration law and regulations;  

● Conducting Know-Your-Rights presentations to community members;

● Assisting with program communications and reports by tracking case statistics and outcomes, and determining success stories for use in reports and advocacy materials. 

● Providing expert testimony to media on current immigration law and policy topics; 

● Performing case-related administrative duties, including maintaining accurate, complete and confidential case files and legal software. 

Qualifications 

● Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction, preferably in New York State; ● Minimum of 2 years of experience in immigration law; 

● Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills; 

● Ability to set priorities and excellent judgment; 

● Excellent interpersonal skills; 

● Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet deadlines 

● Ability to move throughout the building and climbing stairs. 

● Deep understanding of and ability to work well with people of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations, racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.


Compensation and Benefits:  

Salary is commensurate with background and experience.
